Has anyone found a good charge/ bullet combo for a youth shooter? Looking for something that will reliable kill deer out to 100yds. 50cal. Set up to shoot BH209.
I would think shooting around 85 grains with a Barnes bullet would be plenty for that. I shoot 100 grains and it does fine. Not a ton of recoil either.
My daughter is using 70gr (vol) 777 with 180gr 10MM XTP in a Blue MMP Sabot. Very accurate with little recoil. Have not shot a deer with that combo yet but I have killed several with my Encore using that bullet with100gr. Blackhorn loads.
So I just picked up some Barnes 225gr XPBs. Assuming they pattern well, what is the lightest hunting charge you would consider to be ethical? I see BH209 shows average velocities for a variety of bullets using 80, 100 & 120gr measurements. Is 60gr, by volume, too little? Should I start with no less than 80?
A chronograph would be helpful, but I'd guess that 60grs will give at least 44 magnum results...maybe a little better.
....and it has a reputation of being a deer killer.
