I would think shooting around 85 grains with a Barnes bullet would be plenty for that. I shoot 100 grains and it does fine. Not a ton of recoil either.

This might be a dumb question but does reducing the bullet weight reduce recoil?

I have another gun that shoots 100gr by volume with a 250gr Barnes very well.

If I drop to 85gr of powder, should I stay with the 250gr bullet?

My daughter is using 70gr (vol) 777 with 180gr 10MM XTP in a Blue MMP Sabot. Very accurate with little recoil. Have not shot a deer with that combo yet but I have killed several with my Encore using that bullet with100gr. Blackhorn loads.

So I just picked up some Barnes 225gr XPBs. Assuming they pattern well, what is the lightest hunting charge you would consider to be ethical? I see BH209 shows average velocities for a variety of bullets using 80, 100 & 120gr measurements. Is 60gr, by volume, too little? Should I start with no less than 80?

First MZ deer I ever killed I was shooting 80gr pyrodex and a patched round ball, recoil was about like a 410 shotgun.
