My wife qualified with a Ruger Mark II target in .22, of course. She's a heck of a good shot and beat the pants off most who were qualifying that day. I know a 22 is a lot light for carry but I figure it's better than nothing. She's a small woman with some arthritis in her hands. Also, she's a little recoil shy. Looking around I found the Ruger LCP II Lite Rack. Does anyone here have any experience with these and think it's worth a look see?

You can certainly kill an attacker with a .22. But, it very likely won’t be an immediate kill.

I would rather my wife have a good canister of pepper spray than a .22 pistol for self protection.

sorry ive never handled one of those but im definitely curious. My wife is 5 feet and 100 pounds and hates recoil. We tried EVERY gun possible and finally she was able to stand shooting a 380 out of the Sig P238 (mini 1911 clone). Some way that gun absorbs a massive amount of recoil. She beat the pants off everyone in the class qualifying too. worth a look is all im saying.

Well, we went with the lcp II in .22. Neat little pistol and my wife really liked it. Now plenty of range time to get her throughly use to it. If I can find them we might try the Federal Punch which offers pretty good performance out of small pistols....so I was told. I kind of had the same feelings as scn so maybe I'll get her some pepper spray too.

I have an SR 22 and really like it. My brother's wife has one setting next to her bed and she is a dead shot with it.

Poking holes in people hurts more than pepper spray I will bet, been in military gas chambers a few times and while it was very bad I could have beat the crap out of whoever put me in there, I'm sure the deeper hurt would offer more pain. A 22 mag with Hornaday ammo can give ballistics close to a 380 and may dig deeper if some fmj ammo is used in the mix

No doubt it will hurt more. It will kill them if the holes are in the right place. But, it very likely will NOT be an immediate kill.

But, IMO, unless you shoot them in the eye/ear where it gets into the brain cavity, the pepper spray is more likely to immobilize them before they can continue an attack.

YMMV

I will have to disagree. I have been pepper sprayed twice. Having extra holes in you will be a much greater deterrent. When you add that with the sound of being shot at the bad guy will know know if it’s a 22 or 9mm in the moment. He will either attack or retreat. Hopefully the later.

The biggest disadvantage with spray is it will not only effect the bad guy but it will also effect you and anyone in the room. After being sprayed if the assailant decides to attack I do not want to be suffering the same effects he is.

Shooting an unarmed assailant with most anything will probably make then stop or run away. An armed assailant is a different story. The job of the victim, firearm, and round in that case is to make the assailant unable or unwilling to fire their weapon. It's on them if their choices work.

A friend gave me a box of Winchester silver tips, but I haven’t had a chance to see how they compare to punch .

I think it was 44Mag who mentioned above that pepperspray, lights up the room. Amen.

Pray your wife never has to defend herself but if that lcp comes out it is to stop the attacker. Hit the threat and keep hitting it until it is no longer a threat. No longer a threat just means no longer attacking. High center mass (read chest) is the muscle group attacking you whether using a hammer, knife, gun or fist. Hurt it, hurt that muscle group. Don't shoot and observe, keep hitting it till it becomes obvious they are out of the fight.
(Otherwise they will kill or hurt you, that was established before you presented your weapon.)
Guessing your wife, like you, is a nice person. The only assistance you render a perpetrator is on the 911 call mention you need medical help. Don't go close no matter what whinning they do. They attacked you and are still a threat to you when you make the call. Even if they don't appear to be conscious.

Always amazes me when people expect an instant kill shot with any caliber. Especially on a hunting forum.

Best option is to see it coming and avoid. Trust your instincts, if they feel wrong get away...
