from what I gathered last year mainly first thing...kinda died down in the afternoon for me. Mainly after coming off of roost.

Any time but midmorning seems to have highest rate of kills, next to early morning, but I almost killed a Tom (goofed up on my part) last year in the afternoon not long before they flew up.

Dont give up on one that doesnt come in first thing. I call 9-10 magic hour. After breeding hens they tend to wonder away looking for more receptive hens. Dont over call.
Sometimes the best call is raking leaves with hand.
It will become the most frustrating thing you will love to do. You will always second guess yourself on strategy. Thats what makes it so fun.
After you get a few hunts under your belt, try and go with an experienced hunter.
I would be glad to go with you a couple of times mid season, and I'll leave my gun at home. :)

If you can't kill them within the first hour you might as well give up for the day, especially on public land.
