Honestly believe that the bus driver should have stopped. If the smoke had gotten to him, it could have caused an accident seriously hurting or even killing people.

Really lucky that noone was hurt.

It should have been treated the same as a fire on the bus. Would he have continued driving? More training is needed evidently.

I teach in that district. So many unknown variables. JBHS is very rural, roads are decent but no road shoulders in many areas. I would advise removing the videos from the site for legal reasons.

ROBERTSON COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — It was a chaotic bus ride in Robertson County after a smoke device went off.
The Robertson County School District said a high school student will receive disciplinary action after yesterday's incident.
The video given to News 2 captured red smoke billowing throughout a Robertson County school bus.

"Well, there was obviously a lot of yelling and some of the kids just tried to cover up and take cover," Mike said.
Mike only wanted to share his first name with News 2. He said his son's bus just left Jo Byrns High School. Students were heading to their vocational classes in Springfield when a high school student deployed the device.

"I know one of the kids, their shoes were damaged," Mike said.

He said eventually the device was thrown out the window but remnants remained.

"My main concern was the safety of the kids. I feel like they should have been evacuated by the bus in the safe area," Mike said.

According to the Robertson County School District, kids were not evacuated from the school bus and the bus driver was able to get to their final destination.

"And my big concern is that the bus drivers need some sort of protocol, just as if there was a fire on the bus you think they would stop the bus and evacuate the kids but that wasn't done," Mike said.

Mike said his biggest concern is parents weren't notified about the incident.

"Due to the school being closed today there was no opportunity to contact somebody from the school, and I feel that parents need answers," Mike said.
Robertson County School District released the following statement:

"On Monday, Jan 30, a Robertson County Schools student deployed a smoke device on a district bus while the bus was in motion.

Prompt action on the part of the driver averted any serious safety concerns and the bus continued to its destination without any further issues.

The student who initiated the incident is being dealt with according to district disciplinary procedures."

Some kids did this during a h.s talent show in the gym while I was still there. Actually I got the blame for it . Arson investigator, fire ,police bomb squad all there. This was 1992 .
It was chaos in a large gym . Can't imagine what it was like on a bus. Wasn't me really .
Think someone could have mistaken that for a true bomb and jumped off the bus in motion . I'd suspect this ends bad .

Admittedly, I only watched one of the videos...and this is only my opinion. Take it for what you paid for it.

30 years ago I was working full time night shift. I had a class A CDL. A friend of our family was a school bus contractor for Knox county. She found herself short a driver and ask if I would help out...till she found someone. I agreed. Took a boring class for a couple hrs to get the school bus endorsement. Btw, that's all the "training" you get. My "help" ended up lasting 3 yrs. My opinion is based upon that experience 30 yrs ago.

I don't know what I would have done...I wasn't there. It looked like the smoke cleared pretty fast once the device was removed. This is tough...you can't possibly understand the lack of support for bus drivers unless you've been there. What if the driver would have stopped and unloaded? Do you really want a bunch of high schoolers running around on the side of the road? They have zero respect for the driver...they know they can't do anything to them. It would have been chaos.
The school won't back the driver...at all. It's not like when we went to school. Here is an example...from 30 yrs ago. I caught a middle school girl giving a highschool boy a bj. I wrote them up and turned into principal. Next day, me and the bus owner had to have a meeting with principal. She was tearing up the report, and didn't want anything else said about it. Said they didn't want to risk getting sued. Within a wk, the owner had cameras installed in all her busses... probably the first real ones in Knox county. (Some used those fake ones). Never again would I write anyone up, regardless of what it was, unless there was undeniable proof on the video. Kinda just let them do whatever, and watch the video at night...see if you caught anyone doing something they shouldn't be. Even 30 yrs ago...to many Karen's wanting to sue because their little darling would never do anything like that. I imagine it's much worse now!!
Oh, and most of those kids looked to be more interested in making a video than getting to fresh air.
Had that driver stopped and unloaded...had one of those kids got hit by a car...you can bet the school would have thrown the driver under the bus...with zero legal support. I can guarantee it!!

Just my .02 worth.

In the 9th grade, which would have been around 1972 or 1973, I got five licks for hitting a girl in the side of the face with a spitball while riding the bus.

Coach Wheatley was the assistant Principle and he lifted my feet about 6 inches off the floor with every lick of that paddle. :D :D

You can bet your azz I didn't shoot another spitball through a straw the rest of my time in school.

A little tough love goes a long way...
