Start by finding a place where you can hear a long way, usually I would do this a few days before the season. Locate birds by doing this and move in to their areas to hunt.

If that's not possible use google earth to find areas which are good habitat and try them through trial and error. I would caution against alot of pre season scouting for risk of bumping birds

Best thing to do is get on the back forty where no-one wants to go. Public land birds seem to be right near the main roads/trails pre-season,but as soon as season starts,they completely change patterns and move WAY inland.
