I haven't seen or heard it yet but a couple days ago man said his four wheeler started smoking a little.

He changed the oil in it again yesterday and called me this morning and said it is knocking and smoking.

I don't know much about motors but it sounds like maybe a broken ring?
Maybe the knocking is the broken piece of ring on the piston?

Freaking sucks.
We have never had good luck buying used so I decided to not worry about it and buy a brand new 2013 Honda Rancher for him.

That worked good.

Guess we will find out today how good the warrenty is on them from Abernathy's.

Better be a non issue.

Reminds me of hee haw.... if it twernt for bad luck....

Is the knock in the top end or bottom end of motor?

Wondering aloud here: if oil filter was installed backwards the top end would knock as the oil would be restricted to the valves.
Don't ask how I know.

I almost made that mistake once. Didn't realize 4-wheelers took a special oil.

They might request records to perform warranty work.

take it to the shop sounds like what is wrong with it to me,,
best way to fix it
or you could run it, let it smoke a lot right at the edge of your property so your neighbor can get the second hand smoke effect,,,,,
Okay, that was bad,

Yep. When I bought mine Honda the guy that owns the place drummed that very thing into my head before he would allow it off the show room floor.
