I recently bought a dpms and one place on the gun says 308 and the barrel says 7.62 nato 1 in 10. So is it ok to shoot 308 cartridge ? I seem to read conflicting answers. Somebody school me on this.

308 is safe to shoot either, but not so sure the 7.62 nato can handle higher pressures.

My reloading manual(hornady) for same powders and projectiles has the service rifle with lesser charges for max loads than the 308, so that would mean the 7.62 is not safe to load at those higher pressures. Shame there is no dpms support.

BTW, my Speer reloading manual says not to shoot any bullet over 200 grains. That might account for the higher pressures. Maybe 200 grains for bear, moose or elk but 150-180 grains for deer should be adequate. How many head of game have been taken with the Ol' Reliable 30/30?

its not the pressure difference or cartridge dimensions where you have problems. its the difference in SAAMI headspacing specs but i imagine all of these 7.62 nato civilian rifles are reamed more closely to a .308 spec.
