DFW Area: Things to Do?

Mrs. TAFKAP and I will be in the DFW area next month. Neither of us have ever been, and have absolutely no idea what there is to do.

1) I despise the Dallas Cowgirls, so no interest in seeing the Jerry Jones Mahal
2) Cowboy Hall of Fame type stuff doesn't interest either of us
3) I'd love to go to Six Flags, but momma's preggers....so it wouldn't be much fun (for her )


Any ideas?

The DFW metroplex is huge. I've lived here 8 years. What part of this monstrous concrete jungle will you be in?

DFW has a little bit of just about everything. There are plenty of museums, zoos, aquariums, amusement parks, a million restaurants, etc. I'm not really into those things, so I can't really recommend any particular attractions. My girlfriend raves about the Dallas World Aquarium and the Dallas Arboretum & Botanical Gardens. Most of my free time is spent fishing or scouting and hunting the national grasslands that are about an hour or two outside of the city.

You will see when you get here, but I find the DFW metroplex itself to be relatively unattractive and I usually try to spend my long weekends and vacation days somewhere else like East Tennessee where there are trees and hills and a lot less people, cars and concrete.

Oh yeah, there are two Cabela's and two Bass Pro Shops in the DFW metroplex if you get bored. There is also one of the greatest archery facilties on the planet out near Fort Worth. Cinnamon Creek Ranch is the name of it.

I only went to see a concert, so I don't know what else there is to do. We went to the Cowboys' stadium. It was ok.

If nothing else, go to the Cowboys stadium just to see how big it is. The Texas Rangers' baseball stadium is just down the street from it, if you like baseball.

We went to the Book Depository, where JFK was shot. I had no intention of going, but one of my buddies wanted to go. I gotta say, it was really interesting, and I'm glad I went. You can stand on the X in the street where JFK was shot. It's a pretty cool museum. BTW...you CANNOT take pictures in the museum.

Dallas is HUGE. There is a LOT of traffic, especially in rush hour. Makes Memphis look like a cakewalk. They have toll roads there, so have some change handy.

Just about all of the toll roads have been automated and they have removed the toll pay stations where you used to pay cash. Most of us locals have a toll tag on our windshields that is electronically linked to an account where our credit cards get billed for tolls. I'm not sure how it works for people who don't have a toll tag. I think they have cameras that take a picture of your license plate and then they send you a bill in the mail or send your rental car company a bill if you rented a car.

Well, my first trip was 10 yrs ago, and that was when we had the toll roads. I don't remember toll roads this past year, but we also took a different route and stayed at a different place. I'm not familiar with Dallas enough to tell you where we were. LOL

Stockyards in Fort Worth. Worth the stroll through, and they have an indoor rodeo every Friday and Saturday night (maybe Sunday too, but don't know for sure). If you've never seen a Texas Longhorn up close, be outside for the cattle drive - those are some serious horns.

The downtown area of Fort Worth looks very nice; we drove through on a Sunday morning on our way out of town and wished we had another day to spend down there. It looked like what downtowns used to be in cities.

Unfortunately, we spent half a day at the Book Depository in Dallas. If you believe Kennedy was the best thing since sliced bread, you'll love it; if you have a more realistic view of history, you'll be shaking your head a lot. I don't know if it's the norm, but the day we went it was seriously overcrowded. If we'd have known what it was like, we'd have spent it in downtown Fort Worth.

The conference is at the FTW Omni hotel. Since we'll likely only have a day for sightseeing, I'm leaning towards Daley Plaza and the Kennedy museum. We're history nerds, so that's likely our first draw.

Agree with BMan about the Stockyards and the cattle drive.

Ft. Worth Zoo is great!

Don't forget about Southfork Ranch in Plano.

Fort Worth Stock Yard is really cool. A lot of good places to eat and things to see down there.

Also got to Cabala�s while there. It�s one of the biggest ones I seen with awesome museums inside.

I think what we'll do is hit up Daley Plaza. If there's enough time, we'll head north to the South Fork Ranch. Besides that, not much time for anything else. The hotel is less than 4 miles from the Stockyards. We'll likely spend some down time there. I think I might even hit up Billy Bob's for an overpriced Shiner Bock.
