Colorado elk trip

Made another trip to NW Colorado this past week. This was my 2nd attempt at a DIY elk. We arrived a day and half early and immediately started scouting. The first day we found a legal bull and 14 cows in a meadow on private. A little research and found the land owners phone number. I made a call asking for permission, but the land owner was hunting that week. Super friendly guy!
The day before opening day we spotted 5 cows and 1 bull on public in the same spot I had a close encounter at last year.
Opening day arrives and we're set up 800 yards from where we saw the elk the previous morning. Right at daylight I hear a light cow call and then footsteps. I tell my dad to get ready because they are close. He couldn't hear me and just kept fidgeting with something in his vest. The elk heard him and spooked. I raised up to shoot but the only one I had a shot at was the bull. I was not certain if it was legal or not so I did not shoot.
The rest of the week was slow. The only elk spotted were on private after that.
Didn't fill a tag, but we were able to experience unit 21 mule deer rut. I've never seen so many bucks chasing! We met a father and daughter that both shot big deer. We had a great trip and learned a lot. I can't wait to go again!!

Any chance the muley in the bed is a whitetail hybrid? Maybe it's just the angle, but it has a whitetail look to me.
