Never a good thing when your getting into bed and hear a really loud thud outside. I figured I knew what it was but hoped I was wrong. I was not. Not sure if the van took a direct hit or a glancing blow but the roof is dented pretty good. We'll see the total extent of the damage in the morning I guess and hoping nothing else comes down.

Yikes, hate it was the vehicle but better than knocking a hole in the house roof
Yeah, I'm just hoping the damage isn't so great that they total it. It's a 2013 but just turned 150K miles last week and has been paid for for 6 years. Literally costs us almost nothing to have it and its a great car for my kids to learn to drive on. Not wanting to replace it right now :(

The inflated prices of used cars will play in your favor. They will look around for comps and the prices will be higher cause of it and fingers crossed they won’t total it.

If it’s just a dented roof I’d try to get a body shop to pull the dent with a suction cup or take the roof liner down inside and see if you can knock it out with a rubber mallet. The deductible may be more than the hassle of dealing with insurance. Being on the roof “out of sight, out of mind” just make sure it doesn’t hold water in a dent and rust down the road.

THis is my exact plan. If it's not too bad, I may see if I can pop it myself and long as its not creased. I could not care less what it looks like so even if its rippled, as long as it won't rust or leak, I'm good.

IF they do, which is likely I believe, buy it back from the Ins Co and have it repaired yourself with the payout money. You'll likely come out ahead. Sorry about the damage, but hope that's all that happens buddy!

If it were me I would not report it to the insurance company unless you want to deal with the mess of a salvaged title. I would at least run it by a body shop first and get a quote on fixing it without involving the insurance company.

Look at your homeowners insurance as well, may come out there if you don't have a high deductible. Hate it brother I've got two more trees I really need to have took down , one a really big white oak right over my carport . Hope you come out on the damage like you say you may be able to fix it . You can buy those suction cups at an auto parts store , if you where closer I have a couple you could borrow

Well this is my neighbors tree that overhangs our drive so IF I decide to turn it in to insurance, I am going to make sure my agent goes after their homeowners policy.

I was always under the assumption that a neighbors tree, as long as it's not dead, that falls and damages your property is on your home owners insurance not theirs. Am I wrong on this?

I'm under the assumption that what is over the property line is that property owner's responsibility

I am not sure about damage to fences or my home or whatnot, but my buddy who is an insurance agent told me this would 100% fall on my vehicle comprehensive coverage. The good news is that it doesn't look terrible at first blush. Once the ice melt and I dry it and clean it up, I'll be able to tell if I can pop it out myself or have a local dent shop do it. THat being said, I need to have a convo with the neighbor about their tree because this is the third time something like this has happened.
