Looking at a semi auto in .223 for dual purpose coyote/deer(close range). Decided on a mini 14 or an inexpensive AR. I do like the feel of the mini 14.

no contest for me...AR

a few reasons

1) easy availability of hi capacity magazines
2) much better reputation for accuracy than the mini-14
3) like the 1911, tons of makers, tons of spare parts
4) it looks way cooler

Mini 14 are nice handy rifles but they lose out in the accuracy department if you plan anything over about a hundred yards.

Had both and while the Mini14's are fun, the AR's offer different upper options in multiple calibers and like the other guys said, much more accurate. Spend the extra $100 if you can and get a match trigger if you plan on hunting with it.

AR i would look at a 6.8 SPC should be good on deer and out right deadly on varmints.

Big write up last month in Outdoor Life about the rising popularity of the so called "black guns". Looks like AR's will be the gun of choice for some.

I have some 70gr Barnes TSX's loaded for doe season. It want take the place of my 300wsm, but it will be an option for surgical shots on does and varmints.
