What is the proficiency part? I don't know much about it, but too many people don't know what they are doing with a bow.. or even a gun for that matter.

Not all states require a proficiency test but Alaska will. Only certain states do. John unless Alaska has changed their requirement if you take the course in a state that does not require a proficiency exam you will not be required to take the test in Alaska. In other words if your state that you took the course does not require proficiency Alaska may still accept the certification from that state. I don't have a list. I have been telling people for 20 years that Alaska required Bowhunter Ed. The instructors manuals from the 1990 had Alaska listed a requirement state. According to the article I guess the course is required for Archery Only hunts before and now the course will be required for ALL bow hunts.

I would bet that their "proficiency test" is a lot like our hunter education field day. Make sure they know how to knock an arrow draw the bow and which part of the animal to aim at.

"Beginning July 1, 2016, all big game hunters using archery will be required to have successfully completed a department approved certification course. Currently, this is required if the hunt is restricted to archery only."

So they already require it for archery only hunts, but will begin requiring it for all hunters who use archery equipment period.

Southern I modified my post above after I read the article it is clear what is being done. Yes I agree with you. They required it for archery only hunts now all bowhunters will be required to take the course.
The proficiency can vary widely from state to state. I am not sure what Alaska's requirement is.... I know New York and Connecticut required a cetain number of arrows in a group of a certain size, in addition to the safe handling and knowledge of the principles of bowhunting. Wyoming was looking at a similar policy, but I don't know how that turned out.
