Alot of you have been seeing my recommendation for the crimson,arrowleaf,DER, Wheat or oats mix for september planting and hear me talk about how much success i had with it for fall and spring. Here are the fall pics in october...

NOW,.. normally what would be done is go in in july(after the arrowleaf is dead) and bush hog the plot down and just simply overseed in buckwheat. Then, in september, mow that down and replant and reseed. WELL,... i went in in june and had to apply lime and fertilizer. The oats and crimson had allready died out,.. and i figured i would give up a month of the arrowleaf for a jumpstart on the lime and fertilizer for september. So i broke ground to get the lime in real good and sowed in 50 lbs of buckwheat. What happened is a successful plot even in a hot, drought summer. AND,.. i'm in cannon county that is 15 to 17 inches behind on rainfall.

Here is a close up. Notice,.. when i broke the ground i successfully reseeded the clovers for a summer crop. I never expected this,.. especially not the kind of results i received such as this in a severe drought year on a ridgetop plot. I can tell a huge difference this weekend compared to last weekend though. This weeks heat is really taking a toll on. BUT,.. in a normal rainfall year i think this would have been awesome. Here's the close up..

The other impressive thing is the amount of browse on both the buckwheat and the reseeded clover. It has been suburb for me in this plot. You can see how the buckwheat is hammered...the clover is the same way.

SO,.. what i'm getting at with all this is a person would have 2 different choices with this mix. He could simply mow the plot in july and overseed in buckwheat. Then , break ground in september and reseed the clovers.
OR,.. a person could break ground the first or middle of june,.and this will reseed the clover for a summer plot. Mix in the buckwheat at this time. Then, in september, totally replant the plot over in the mix. When you break ground,.. some of the buckwheat should reseed also to supply a fast early fall forage and nurse in the mix.

Like i stated,.. i am VERY impressed with this. This mix would be awesome for folks with as little as 1/2 acre all the way up to 3 acres or more. The amount of forage produced in unbelievable and the ease of planting makes it that much better. AND,.. now knowing i can successfully get a full year of forage from the plot(except during the germination),.. it will be the only mix i ever use in my plots.
 
Great looking food plot. Judging from the second pic you could very well have a good stand of volunteer crimson clover if you don't work your soil too deep.
I use crimson clover in the nursery as a cover crop. Some years we get a good volunteer stand from the previous years crop
 
Tree man,... the second pic was in april. When it died in may, i went in in june and broke the ground and got volunteer reseeding from the clover immediately and it produced a summer crop. From all my books,. its not suppose to do that in summer in the south. You ever had your crimson to come up like in the fourth pic in the middle of summer?? In some places last weekend it was 12 inches high. BUT,. the drought has caught up to it now.
 
Great pics, what was the mix amount for the buckwheat on the second go round? I am asking because I usually have it shade out any low growing plants when I plant it?

The fall mix in pic one(fall pic) and the same mix coming in for spring(pic 2)....
50 lbs buck forage oats
15 lbs dixie reseeding clover
5 lbs yuchi or apache arrowleaf
5 lbs dwarf essex rape

And like stated in my post,.. this mix will last til july. There is no need in worrying about jumping up in the spring trying to get a plot. It will be there allready. NOTE,.. i like this cause it don't stop me from turkey hunting.

Then,. in july, you can simply mow the plot down and overseed in buckwheat. OR,.. try what i did. Mow it in june,.. reseed the clovers by breaking the ground , and sow it in buckwheat.

NOTE,...... you could add in around 20 lbs of buckwheat to the fall mix. I should receive some reseeding when i turn mine back under. This will just give you some fast forage til all the other stuff comes in.

I am planning on planting 25 lbs. wheat, 25 lbs. buck forage oats, 10 lbs dixie clover, and 5 lbs. rape. I will add 5 more lbs. clover, do you think the wheat and oats mix will be ok? Also do you think Sept. 15 would be to late to plant? I have not planted yuchi or apache arrowleaf clover do most co-op's carry it?

25 lb wheat, 25 lb oats will work well
you can plant anytime in september or first of october. Don't plant by a date,.. plant on a good prediction of rainfall coming.
The co-op's in my area carry yuchi. If you have trouble at the co-op,.. go to cooperseeds.com.......... you for sure need this arrowleaf in your mix. If not,... up the crimson to 20 lbs.
 
Deerchaser007, Is the 5lbs of DER enough for a good fall/winter planting? My plot will be mainly for fall/winter, b/c the ground will be planted in green beans next year. Would you change any of the mixture for this purpose?
 
Matt74,... yes i would change it. You do not need the arrowleaf. You can use 50 lbs oats or wheat/20 lbs crimson/5 lbs der.

The oats and rape will carry you thru winter. While the crimson kicks in for early spring forage til end of may,... in which your plot will be dead and gone.

Note,.. it would not hurt to throw in a extra 25 lbs of wheat or oats either. Most people are gonna sow alittle heavier this year. BUT,.. don't get carried away. Throwing to much of one seed down can kill out one of your other seeds. I did this last year in a oats/winter greens mix. I oversowed the oats and it nearly completely stopped the winter greens from even germinating. With that said,.. it might not hurt to just plant the mix,.. then wait a few weeks to see how much pressure its gonna get. If pressure is high,.. top sow in some winter wheat.

by the way,. 5 lbs is plenty when you mix it with oats or wheat. 5 lbs of rape is alot of seed. Thats like asking is 5 lbs of ladino enough for a acre. When you starty sowing small seeds like this,.. they can go a long way.
