A friend found the large item in a creek last week while hiking here in East Tennessee. I was at his house last weekend and he also pulled out some arrowheads that he's found locally over the years. One he made a keychain from. The early silver dollar is just for reference for size.

Some nice pieces!

What in the world is the big thing he found in a creek?
I've always heard it called petrified wood, but I don't know if that's really what it is. I have a piece of it as well.

Edit: looks to be a lycopsid fossil. According to google that is a fossilized piece a giant fern type tree. I'm bored tonight so I'm learning all kinds of neat stuff.

If you're going to be stupid, you'd better be tough!
