444 Marlin

Anybody here shoot a 444 marlin? I picked one up cheap last week due to it being mis-stamped from the factory. The barrel is stamped 44 rem mag and the pawn shop said it won't feed properly it jams everytime. I told them I bet they are using the wrong ammo, and I ended up being right.

I had a buddy that hunted with a 444 and he loved it.

Two items:
1. I would be extremely careful with the first pull of the trigger with this rifle and a live round in the chamber.

2. The 444 has tremendous recoil, limited range, great knockdown capability. The recoil will definitely catch your attention.

I have no idea why but here recently I have really been wanting a big bore rifle for hunting woods and thicker areas. A 444 Marlin, 45-70 or something along those lines will probably find it's way to the safe before long.

I don't think so. It's got a 24" round barrel, from my research marlin never made a 24" round barrel in 44 mag. However in 1970, which is what year the rifle is, they made a 24" round barreled 444. It was a centennial model.

Okay, a picture. The 44 mag brass is 1.285 inches long where the 444 marlin brass is 2.250 inches long.



I do not see how the rifle can chamber a 444 marlin round.

For sure the rifle has been rechambered.

I would be very careful pulling the trigger on this one.

Yes the rifle feeds and chambers 444. The carrier for a 44 mag in a 336 receiver is unique and this rifle has the 444 carrier(which is completely different). I am almost 100% positive the barrel was mis-stamped when it left the marlin plant in 1970.

No need to hide behind a rock, a gunsmith has gone through this rifle and agrees it is a factory built 444.
