You can look at Winchester's (or others') website at ballistics to see trajectory, velocity, and energy are at various distances. The deer can't tell a difference. The win mag and wsm will have some advantage at 300 and beyond...mainly velocity and energy.

It's not a huge difference either way.

Na. Now if you want to look at 2 other .30 cal guns, the 300 RUM and the 300 Weatherby Mag, you'll see a noticeable difference but at quite a price difference as well.

Ren nailed it. There's a huge difference in recoil and it's totally unnecessary for deer at 300 yards. I love .308-based cartridges for the short action, good ballistic s, and effectiveness on deer. In standard length cartridges I give the 270 an edge over the '06 for the same reasons; less recoil, flatter shooting, and just as effective on the killing end.
