Which has the best potential for an accurate 300 yard gun? Stock Savage ML-II or H&R 45-70 conversion?

My stack Savage would shoot great at longer distances with .452 bullets, but I have a looser barrel ignition problems at inconvenient moments. No problems with .458 bullets (Barnes Original) but I just haven't yet found a combination that shoots quite as good.

Although the 45-70 is loaded down for the kids, I'm very happy with accuracy at 200 yards (200g SST).

I'm going to try a new stock, eliminate vent liner, and polish bore on Savage. I also plan to switch back to N-120. Any other mods to consider (not going to spend money on barrel)? If the Aeromax, etc perform well on deer at these distance I'm open to trying, but hunting is the purpose of both guns.

I'm new to the .45 thing. I guess I won't know until I'm at the range, but am wondering which has more potential (without much modification) as a rule of thumb?

45 hands down... however you could try Luke's 310gr APB bullet(.458 dia) with a sabot in the savage. This bullet will prolly have one of the better bc's of any bullet you can find for the savage. Keep us updated.

Fullstream had a good load with a Barnes Original 300gr and N120 in his Savage.

I'm not sure the long bullet Roost advised will stabilize in the slow twist of the MLII but you can try. Luke sells an upgraded module ignition system for the MLII that will increase performance and ignition reliability.

That's the load I shot until recently, jlanecr500. I liked it and shot deer out to 320 yards with it, but at the velocity I really wanted I couldn't figure out shooting AS tight as the SST and H4198. I think I'll go back to N120 and drop from 62-60 and see what I can do.

You can poke around with different charges and might get lucky and find the accuracy node. I have found it is better to bite the bullet and shoot a progression of charges. Find out what Fullstream was shooting, drop 1 grain and shoot a group. Increase 1/2 grain and shoot a group. Continue to increase 1/2 grain at a time until the groups grow smaller and then larger again or sabot failure. When the groups shrink, your sweet spot is real close.
You can do another progression in .3 grain intervals around the sweet spot to get dialed in closer. If you have 3 groups that are small, use the middle load.

I was using BO's and 300 exp's
I used 60gn for the BO's with excellent accuracy.
I used 58gns for the 300 exp's.
Mostly shot paper with the BO's as I only acquired them the last year I had my .50.
The exp's flat out dirt roled deer with great accuracy pretty much were go to bullet for hunting the 6 years I owned the .50.
I sure do miss that gun, killed a ton with it and carried most years instead of a rifle.

Thanks for the help! Maybe dropping from 62 to 60 will be a good starting point.

I would love to shoot Barnes Expanders. Are they a .452 bullet?
