Which has the best potential for an accurate 300 yard gun? Stock Savage ML-II or H&R 45-70 conversion?
My stack Savage would shoot great at longer distances with .452 bullets, but I have a looser barrel ignition problems at inconvenient moments. No problems with .458 bullets (Barnes Original) but I just haven't yet found a combination that shoots quite as good.
Although the 45-70 is loaded down for the kids, I'm very happy with accuracy at 200 yards (200g SST).
I'm going to try a new stock, eliminate vent liner, and polish bore on Savage. I also plan to switch back to N-120. Any other mods to consider (not going to spend money on barrel)? If the Aeromax, etc perform well on deer at these distance I'm open to trying, but hunting is the purpose of both guns.
I'm new to the .45 thing. I guess I won't know until I'm at the range, but am wondering which has more potential (without much modification) as a rule of thumb?
