90% of the time, no. The big shooters, and especially the ones with unique characteristics, yes. Mainly because we own a larger tract of land and see deer from one year to the next, typically. The tv shows go silly, definitely not like them. But if we have a really big 8 pt or a big 10 pt, they are named "the big 8" or "the wide 10". We did have one the last 2 years that had a lot of palmation and we named him "moose". A lot of folks go silly with it

One of my sons names them when he shoots. Kinda of weird, even for my family... Awhile back he was hunting and I heard a shot. I texted "?". He texted back the name "Dead Deer". Weird name right.

Over Thanksgiving he was out hunting and I heard 2 shots. I text "??". He texted back "Bring The Tractor". He never said which one was "Bring The" and which one was "Tractor" but I suspect the doe was "Bring The" and "Tractor" was the big old buck...

You may think I am being silly here but, if you haven't figured it out yet, we find it silly to name bucks...

No. If one is unique we will say like crab claw 8 or short g3 10 or something like that just to identify them easier. But no we have a hit list and we know who is on it. If it's a new deer we make a judgment call.

Sometimes they end up with a name as we use an identifying characteristic when discussing them. This year have one "named", and he's named "weirdo" because he has a weird rack and is on the cam more than all the other bucks combined. Typically it's just "big 10" or "big 9". I've killed "big 10" twice, as there's been two of them. "Big 9" was the biggest deer I've ever seen on camera or from the stand and I shot and lost him with a bow.

Oh, also had a "gimpy" a few years ago, as he had a limp and we saw him often.

I name them when I catch them on cam often enough to be familiar, and they have an identifiable rack, which is usually around 2.5yrs old. Every named buck is monitored by charting cam and personal sightings with date, time of day, location, and weather. I follow them as long as they use my property or they're dead. Could be months or it could be years.

Naming them allows me to keep track of them without getting confused or overlapping info. After a season or two I have enough info on an individual buck to reasonably predict where he likes to be at certain times and certain weather patterns. On the macro, I learn about the property as a whole, how it's used by bucks generationally.

The names are merely an identifiable label. If I call a buck, "the big 8", the name could apply to any one of a dozen or so bucks. By giving them a name I know one 8pt from the the other 8s, and so forth.
