Any ideas?

I have a good friend that has a neat piece in his collection. He has had it a very long time and says it a Mayan burial statue and is quite valuable. Have you seen anything similar to this before and would have any idea if it's worth?

I think you have come to the wrong place for that if thats Mayan. I hope it is for his sake.

I just don't have a clue about it and trying to dig up some info for him. Not much info out there.

I certainly am NOT an expert on Central American art, but something about it just does not look Mayan to me. More Aztec, maybe.
My first thought on seeing it was "mother and child". Maybe "goddess and king or noble warrior?"
A starting point might be to take it to the history dept., of the U of T there in Knoxville.

I watch a lot of Antique Roadshow and probably 90% of the Central and South American artifacts they have on there are fakes. Without having it examined by an expert, there's really no way of knowing if it's authentic. Besides the Mayans and Aztecs, there were dozens of pre Columbian civilizations that inhabited Central America for over 3000 years or so. One of my neighbors is a world renowned expert in textiles and fabrics. She was called down to Mexico four years ago to examine ancient textile found at an Olmec site. She said the dig had unearthed thousands of artifacts and the textile she examined was around 1000 years old.

Since these cultures were such prolific makers of pottery over thousands of years, a lot of these objects are relatively inexpensive and can be purchased for less than $1000 with papers of authenticity.
