Not really a rant but just something I don't get.
I have noticed several people doing this and I just don't get it.
During the fight of a fish they will adjust the drag on their spinning reels like 5 or 6 times.
As well as pull the line out by hand while fighting the fish.
Do their reels drag not stay where they set them or do they just like messing with it for the camera?

I don't understand it.
When I get a new reel I set the drag and I am done with it.
Sure sometimes I guess the dial can get bumped or something and move a LITTLE ?
Ranks right up there with them saying MY PB!

I Loosen my drag when I get in from fishing. Helps to keep from denting the drag washer and keep it smooth. Sometimes I need to adjust during a fight but not often. I think they are trying to "drama" it up. I quit watching a couple good fishing channels when they adopted the clickbait formula.

"your never going to guess what we caught" "and then THIS happened" "Shocking Catch on this magic bait"
Spend 5 minutes pimping everything from your lure to your deodorant. Be sure to like and subscribe, and comment, and buy some stuff !
Cue loud Rock music as you add the obligatory boat ride clip.
Fade music while you tell the viewers how the Fishpro jock strap makes those bumpy rides so much more comfortable. Then go on about how
great your technique using XYZ lures (click the sponsor link below) is.
Put on a live bait.
Fake several bites to make the fishing seem better. "its red hot! " "these big ones are Smart ! "
Over exaggerated hook set.
Next you whip your rod from side to side while fighting fish with your hand on the reel loosening the drag to add drama and make that reel drag sound.
Cue More Loud heavy metal music.
Pimp your rod, lure, line, swivel, leader, sunscreen, hat, glasses, jock strap, coffee, toilet paper, lunch snacks, boat, oil change place, local lawn mowing service, etc...
Be sure to pump the rod so fast that there is plenty of slack in the line so that "monster" 4 lb fish can get off.
Try to keep the fish in the water as long as possible to make it seem like a bigger fish.
Be sure to pant and talk to the camera in broken sentences.
More loud rock music, because nothing says fishing like blasting guitars !
Even better is if that "big hammer" shakes off at the boat. Woooooieee that was going to be a PB fish!!!
When you land that "chunky monster" 4 lb grouper Be sure to block the camera so there is no frame of reference to see how small it really is.
Quickly hold the fish at max arms length close to the camera so its a little out of focus and takes up the whole frame so it looks huge.
Make sure you sound like you are trying to pass a pine cone while holding up that monster !
If the fish is really small, be sure to sling some water on the lens to further obscure the size of this whopper !
Release the fish quickly so the viewers cant judge the size of the fish.
Tell the viewers you need to catch your breath as you give a sermon on conservation and releasing fish to save the planet.
Obligatory product placement clips around the boat featuring your Yeti cooler and tumbler, Costa Sunglasses, Salt Life fishing hat, ugly sandals, a pile of rods, close up shot of your fishing reels, You grinning like a possum eating briars, Sponsor logo shirt, Lure on a rod, livewell full of baits.
Sunset shot with more groveling for subscribers, comments, and likes.
2 minutes actual fishing 18 minutes of pimping and hype.
:p

Like Hammer33, I back off the drag on my reels after fishing so there is an adjustment happening each day and I will also check the drag between fish a lot of times.

I don't imagine this is a thing in freshwater but adjusting the drag throughout the fight is a common practice for big game fishing. The fish will often go on a 100yd+ run when first hooked and you need a fairly loose drag so you don't break the fish off. After the fish burns their energy, you can tighten up a bit and put the wood to them.

Wait I can't catch fish if they don't see the right logo on my shirt and my cooler isn't keeping my water at the exact temp my mama says…

This. Salt water. Not too many freshwater fish are gonna give you this kind of fight. It's faux drama and posturing

probably because they didnt know or didnt set the drag correctly to begin with, or dont know or dont have their reels serviced. if folks are denting or getting flat spots in drag washers then something is causing it. the only thing that might happen, is the tension spring washers might flatten out on cheaper reels.

i get a chuckle out of youtube on the technical stuff. seems like everyone has a marine shop now. there is this one video on "dedicated power" and the guy goes on about how much amps and power these fish finders use and explained the firehose/water hose analogy. he recommended #8 or #10 marine conductor, which is fine depending on length and desired voltage drop. but one commentor asked: so im confused, if these pull so much power and amps why do they have these skinny 16 or 18 gauge wires connected to their units?

I thought the same, but if you have a good bit of electronics, you need the larger wire. All my electronics, sonic hub, nmea harness, both depthfinders and transducer have tinned 10 gauge wire, hot and negative wire. Yes, it makes a difference, a huge one.

thats because of voltage drop and not necessarily because of a huge increase in power or "amps".

at less than 3 amps per head unit 14 or 16 ga conductor is certainly enough to handle the amperage but the voltage drop at 3 amps at 20 feet is the same as a dead battery at 12v even if you start out at a fully charged 12.7v for lead acid and borderline for a 13v AGM.

the voltage drop with 10 ga conductor would be .08 volts or 12.62v at 20ft.

these units will start acting funny or shut down when they get close to their low voltage limit and with the wrong size conductor you can create that problem even with a fully charged battery.

I don't do it but there HAS to be something to it. You can't make me believe a guy with 300k on the line is going to "dress it up" for the camera. Professionals do it not just YouTubers. Does it make a difference 100 percent of the time.. no but if it can only save them from breaking one fish off in a season could gain them several spots in AOY points at the least.

I don't use/trust drags period.....I backreel with spinning reels and free-spool thumb pressure on baitcasters when needed myself.

I need to work on both of these. Im not a spinning rod fisherman or a crankbait fisherman. I don't fish anything with treble hooks much. Im comfortable with big single hook baits and big line so I just horse them in. I need to be more versatile.
