    Food Plots In a quandary

Just ordered a few bags of buckwheat. My bees like and the turkey love it once it comes to seed heads.

    MS Season

Heck of a year Chad! I thought that first buck you killed was a giant until I kept scrolling and saw the collared buck. That sucker is huge. It would be neat to see all the info they retrieve from the collar.

    I'm typically a meat hunter

Thanks Andy. A Euro would have been nice for the girl's but our dang dog decided to jump up on my trailer where I had their horns and chew my oldest horns up. Does anyone want a free dog?

    I'm typically a meat hunter

No doubt. It's fun shooting a deer but not nearly as fun as watching the kids kill them.

    I'm typically a meat hunter

I have always been a public land hunter and a meat hunter. I've always wanted to shoot something with decent horns but that always took a back seat to putting meat in the freezer. Well this year both of my daughters killed a buck during bow season. My youngest killed her buck at 51 yards...

    Declining duck hunting

I wish I knew the answer but this is the first year in 25 years I didn't go duck hunting. The places that I used to go and jump shoot woodies are all neighborhoods now. Maybe that is partially the problem is duck holes are slowly being converted to neighborhoods.

    Raccoon calling anyone??

I use my electronic predator call and a spinning decoy and they will come flying in and tackle the decoy. Most of the time it is within 5 minutes or less. Be ready for coyotes to show up too when you play coon in distress.

How many more years of deer hunting do you have left?

Back when I was in high school my brother and I were invited to join a hunting lease with 3 old timers. They were honest and said they needed us for our backs to be able to do the heavy lifting. We were more than happy to oblige. Fast forward 24 years and all of them have passed except one...

Land Management Skill vs Hunting Skill

I've been on both sides of the coin. Most of my life I've been a public land bowhunter. To be successful you have to be a good hunter and also be able to adapt to high traffic in your hunting spots. Currently I have a few acres that I can plant and a shooting house to hunt from. I still play...

    Gun safes

You get what you pay for in safes. My primary goal was to keep kids out of my guns and make it slightly more difficult for a thief to walk away with my stuff. Mine says it is rated for 1200 degrees for an hour but I don't have any faith in that. That being said it was a cheap Cannon that I...

    Early Shed

Crazy how different it is everywhere. I saw chasing last night and this morning in Hamilton county.

When do you throw in the towel for this season?

When the season is over. If I'm getting bored in the deer woods I'll throw in a duck hunt or two. Thankfully I'm mostly a meat hunter so the chances of me killing something that will get my heart rate up is pretty high. I also figure worst case scenario is I'm out in the woods packing heat...

How to Take an 11 year old

When hunting public with my daughters we always sat in a ground blind during prime time and if we didn't see any deer we would switch gears to squirrel. Running and gunning squirrels is just as much fun for kids as deer hunting is.

    Barking Dogs and Deer

The birdhouse does work very well. My parent's neighbors dogs were yapping 24/7 so we tried one. They started barking and immediately tuck tail and ran. It took about a week for them to learn not to bark. I highly recommend them but stay on top of the batteries. If the dogs bark alot it...

Food Plots Planning for next season

I plan on doing no till buckwheat early May and then cut it in late July to get a volunteer growth. I'll end up doing no till into the buckwheat with wheat, cereal rye and buck forage oats anywhere from end of August through end of September depending on what the rain looks like. I planted...
