I'd try and bait a coyote with a trapped coon. Trap a coon and then have a #2 trap under the leaves just out of reach from the coon but close enough a coyote will step on it fighting the coon.
The funny thing is, we tried that, somewhat. We have 12 coyote traps, but are only running 3 right now - it's just been too wet. Haven't caught any - we are doing something wrong with it. They are coming through, but not getting trapped. My cousin got one of the trapped possums, killed it and tied it to a tree above a yote trap. They had eaten off it and still didn't get trapped. They seem to be much smarter than me. I'm OCD about this stuff and still can't catch the first one

I was about to say how I use to catch them was I'd get a dead chicken and tie it up high enough that they had to jump for it and have traps circling under it. I caught a handful like that until I'm assuming ones that saw it happen got smart and stopped jumping for dead chickens lol.

Who knows - I need to get better at it.

I was hoping to holler at you - we went to Chatt this weekend and hung out, but had a full agenda. If I had some free time, I would have given you a ring. We were all up on Signal and everywhere downtown. Stayed at the new Holiday Inn downtown there. Next time I'll make sure and slot off some time to meet up with you

Yea give me a holler next time and bring the family by. Up on Signal? Hanging out with that Chattanooga upper class I see lol. I can't say much I'm up on Lookout Mountain everyday and definitely don't fit in with the class up on Lookout. Actually got pulled over leaving work tonight cause the officer up there didn't recognize my truck. Probably cause he's only been on the force up there for a couple months and I've been on Lookout for 17 years. Come on back this weekend and they have the boat show at the convention center and take one home lol

HA I'd love to. It's rare I have an open weekend, had to tend to the wife's agenda this weekend. I actually like Chatt - reminds me of Nashville 25 years ago. My aunt has a little store up there on Signal and we were there to pick up some stuff my wife ordered. Will definitely give you a call next time. I know you work with the railroad and it seems the railroad runs all through all areas there. I'm sure it keeps you busy

Lol I'm not that important, my railroad goes straight up the mountain and straight down Lookout. Only a mile worth of track I have to maintain but it's the climb up and down that's brutal

Dog Proof. Either Dukes or Bridgers. I prefer the bridgers just a bit over the Dukes, seem to have a more sensitive trigger.

Crazy easy to set and take up.

Lots of folks stress out about having them close to a tree, but I actually anchor mine to a tree and haven't lost a trap yet (I did lose one coon to a ?coyote... checked it the next morn, found a coon paw and forearm bones in the trap, so obviously some predator took the coon.

I take a piece of quarter inch cable and put clasps on each end. Wrap the cable around the tree and clasp it around the cable. The other clasp I attach to the trap.

Advantage of that setup is I don't have to tap in or remove an anchor. It literally takes me 30s to set a trap, and 30s to remove one.

The disadvantage is that the coon has often wrapped itself around the cable and tree and is completely immobilized by the next morn. Easy to dispatch, but takes a minute to untangle the mess. Haven't lost a trap yet.
Care to share a pic of how you attach the clasp to each end? What length of cable do you use?

Just a loop with a clasp on each end and cheap crimp. 10 to 12ft cable. Makes it crazy easy to attach to the trap and just loop around a tree and clasp back to itself.

Oh, another trick. After you lose your setting tool, you can actually easily set the traps using the spike of one trap to arm another, then vice versa when setting multiples.

And that is easy to do!
I went for quite a while not know about the "setting tool", and wondered why others claimed the dp traps were so "easy" to set!

For anyone "new" to trying trapping ---- research all the available "setting" tools for the type traps you're trying. These "tools" make it much easier.

The only one that's still a bit challenging to me now is the 330 Conibear. Even with the tools, usually takes me multiple attempts. Maybe in part because I'm a bit "scared" of it. If you try one of these 330s (for beaver) be sure to get the additional safety clip (which becomes last thing you remove when setting).
