The 870 made before 1990 is a great gun. After Remington went to bed with Evil-Mart their quality started downhill. It became so bad that we received several at the shop with chambers that were way out of specification. Remington was ruined. Hopefully, they are doing better now but for a long time their products were not worth having save the Core-Lokt bullet. Somehow they did not ruin it.

Are you suggesting that walmart had an impact on the entire 870 product line?

Seems he's suggesting that about the time 870s became a Wal-Mart stock gun, Remington's QC went downhill. More of a correlation.
Though I think the company's ambitions waned at one point. The steady descent from Wingmaster to the last iteration of the Express. Pump market has become a bargain bucket market instead of a quality one, sadly. Even Winchester initially had major QC when they introduced the SXP.

I really like my Beretta A300 Outlander. It isn't too heavy, recoil is low, the stock is adjustable and it functions flawlessly in all conditions. I have the camo version and I paid $650 for it. I would say the A300 Ultima would be worth a look too. It has some features that the A300 Outlander does not and it isn't too much more.

I do not know for sure but I suspect it is possible that to meet Evil-Mart's demands Remington cut corners. I do know that Remington's quality went straight downhill to where their once fine products were not worth purchasing. I began gun smithing in the early 90's and watched the decline. It was sad. When Remington brought out that 887 heaping pile of junk the destruction was complete.

I was in the same spot wanting a nice all around shotgun. Looked at them all , thought about how i could save a few bucks here and there. In the end i got what i wanted and could not be happier. Benelli M2 12 26" black. Put a thinner 1/2 " pad on it so it fits me perfectly

Franchi Affinity, Benelli Montefeltro, Beretta A300, Browning BPS, Benelli Supernova. These are all under $1k and will serve you well for a lifetime.

After years of shooting about every gauge or action available, I settled on a CZ Bobwhite G2 in 28g. Its light and capable. Within your price range, and gets extra points for classic style.
Its excellent for small game, and has proven effective for turkey and ducks. For the latter 2, I use #9 tss.
As an added bonus, Im not beat up by recoil. Something my body appreciates more as I get older.

Love my 20 gauge Single shot Henry. About as all around as it gets. IMO. Threaded for chokes and about as true shotin shotgun I've had my hands on.
