Wood Stocked Savage Axis

Has anyone else seen the new wood stocked Savage Axis II rifles that Walmart has been getting in recently? I checked one out today and it had a really nice walnut stock, in a monte carlo style stock with raised cheek piece and cut checkering instead of the typical machine pressed checkering. I was actually impressed with the fit and finish between metal and wood. It almost seems like a totally different rifle compared to the regular Axis and Axis II rifles with the synthetic stocks. Still, my mind just can't seem to justify $853 for an Axis, regardless of how nice the walnut looks.

I had no idea but you didn't mean to type $853, did you?
@TboneD Yes, I did. That was the actual price on the hangtag for an Axis II in .308 or .270 with this figured walnut monte carlo style stock with raised cheekpiece. I asked the clerk the same thing cause that's roughly double of the normal selling price for an Axis II in a synthetic stock. That walnut was pretty but it sure ain't worth an extra $400.

I've got an Axis 2 in synthetic that's a sweet shooter. I'd agree, that price point is quite off the mark.
Was it a combo with a scope or anything?

That's nuts. You're dern right it's not worth an extra $400.

Found it on Savage's site. Looks to be only available with the scope and in right hand with an MSR price of $669. I'm sure it's a nice stock but that's still too much for a gun with fairly mixed reviews when it comes to accuracy.

No @Carlos, it wasn't the XP variant, which includes the scope. It was just the bare rifle priced at $853. Maybe Walmart is doing this as a local test to see how desperate people are?

Sorry @TboneD but what you found is not the same rifle as what I'm talking about. The wood stocked version on the Savage website is not the same stock on the rifle I handled yesterday. The Savage website does not show a wooden monte carlo style stock with the raised cheekpiece on the Axis or Axis II. I have done dozens of Google searches and I cannot find this exact rifle anywhere. I'm beginning to wonder if this wasn't made exclusively for Walmart. Trying to figure this one out is driving me nuts! 🤣

Here is the photo of the wooden stocked Axis/Axis II shown on the Savage website. This one appears to be a walnut stained birch or ash.

Here is the type of wooden stock I saw on an Axis II at my local Walmart yesterday, except the walnut was darker and had a lot of figure in the grain.

Not in the market for hunting rifles any longer, but for that price difference I'd be tempted to buy an Axis in a synthetic stock & a wood stock from Boyd's.

Gotcha @utvolsfan77. Forgot you mentioned the monte carlo stock, which I have no use for since like many lefties I shoot either left or right handed. Anyhow, I have no clue but I don't care how fancy the stock is, I'm with @redblood. Makes absolutely no sense to still call it an Axis, or Axis 2, rather.

Actually looks pretty good
It has some nice touches. I was surprised at the figure in the walnut of the one I handled, as well as with the cut checkering rather than machine pressed. It looked great but for that amount of money I can get a Winchester 70 Feather weight and even some Remington 700. I can't quite wrap my head around Savage's pricing strategy of this version of the Axis line.
