Oregon Poachers Busted After Posting "Suspicious" Photo of Trophy Bull Elk on Social Media

A "suspicious" photo on social media led to an investigation that resulted in charges for three people involved in a poaching incident.

Thought it was an interesting story. I am unsure how I feel about the guy who reported the issue being given 5 preference points for reporting the other person. This is the first time I have heard of prefeence pints being used as a reward for reporting someone.

They could have avoided all their troubles, if the could have resisted bragging on social media. A lot of cases ,both game and criminal cases, are made because people can't help posting on so media. I guess that's the world we live in now.

A couple of years ago that happen in Henry Co. some young men shot way to many ducks, dumb enough to put it on FB

Why are you unsure? There's not enough game wardens to be effective in the first place. We have to help in the effort and its incentive.

I am unsure of the gift of preference points. I would rather them give the person cash as opposed to messing with the points.

Strictly from the preference point perspective, it could have a negative impact on other law abiding point holders by throwing draw odds off.
Im unsure of how Oregon conducts their big game draws but gaining 5 points in most other states is like having a time machine. It's a fantastic reward, just not sure it's the best reward.
But let me tell ya, if WY gave me 5 points to turn in a poacher I'd be out there all the time doing covert missions looking for anybody breaking the law

Pretty much my thoughts.....nice reward for busting cheaters....but in a strange unintended way this almost punishes some law abiding hunter who at some point in time will not draw a tag because the informant, with their "extra" points, will draw.....but in the same breath I'll say I'm all for rewarding hunters for saying something when they see concerns....maybe waive their licence cost the following year vs awarding points?

Good points.
Another perspective is that be reducing the poaching,
there is more games for ethical, law-abiding hunters to hunt.

I think something other than "extra points" would be a better way of incentivizing people to turn in poachers. "Extra points" means nothing to people who don't hunt.

5 points in WY would just put me 5 points deeper into no man's land.

My crew has a policy. We don't post on social media when we are doing anything out of the ordinary (day trip, vacation, family visits etc. )

One, I don't want people to know we are gone, and two, just focus on the trip guys.

My wife will post pictures once we get back. We do this simply to stay connected with family. I like seeing their pics, and they like seeing ours.

I hate social media so much. I have largely gone social media free.

For poaching the trophy bull elk, Munoz was fined $15,000, issued a three-year hunting-license suspension, and given 12 months of bench probation. For lying to wildlife troopers, Wilkinson was fined $1,000, issued a five-year hunting-license suspension, and given 40 hours of community service and 12 months of bench probation. Hallett pled guilty to the "Unlawful Take of Buck Deer" charge. She received a three-year hunting-license suspension, 12 months of bench probation, and 40 hours of community service.

While I think the punishment fits the crime here,
somewhat sadly amusing how the more serious charges of "lying under oath" concerning issues of our national security, are often just shrugged off with impunity by or for the powers that be, based totally on politics overriding the law.
