Looking to book my son (15 & an experienced hunter) & I for a bow hunt fall of '22. Give me the good the bad & the ugly on anywhere y'all have been on a guided or at least semi-guided hunting experience. I'm pretty much open to anywhere in lower 48. Money matters, but the experience for him matters more, if that makes sense to you. Thanks in advance, guys.

I've never been on a guided whitetail hunt so I haven't much to offer for recommendations. But I do know of a sprouting, relatively new outfitter near my place in Ohio. Dresbach Outdoors. The family has been farming the ground for a long time and in the last few years it appears one of the boys opened a guiding service, built a lodge, and seem to be doing it the right way. Might be worth a glance while you're doing your search.

I can offer up an option. Last year I went on a semi-guided bow hunt in western KY. It was the last week of October. The rut was running late there last year, confirmed by some others I talked with later, which definitely affected our hunt…along with some bad weather. One day was in the upper 70's and 20mph wind followed by thunderstorms. That's a risk you take with any hunt. That being said, I seen probably over 70-80 deer. They have a 130" minimum with a fine for anything under, and too me that's attractive. Personally I was looking for 140" plus, and while I did see one I would shoot, it didn't get close enough. One guy shot and missed one. Another guy passed a shooter hoping for something bigger. The quality of bucks were clearly there, but the late rut and weather worked against us. I quickly decided I will go back this year, but to be on the safe side in case of a late rut I'd go back the first week of November, which is their second bow hunt. My schedule changed and I ended up booking their gun hunt in mid November this year. I've been on lots of guided and semi-guided hunts and this entire experience was first class. Awesome family run by dad and two daughters that work hard year around working food plots, running cameras, scouting, etc. They own a lot of the property and lease some. It's in Christian and Hopkins County, KY. I really liked that the guide said if for any reason I wanted to move to another stand at any time, like the wind shifting, or for any reason, they would immediately come and get me and move me to another stand. The food was incredible, and I ate too much…lol. It's likely the best experience you'll get for the money. For comparison, I just went all out and booked a bow hunt on the Grigsby Farm in west central Illinois for 2023 and it's $6,500. This western KY bow hunt I paid $3,500…though they did raise the price for 2022. Now, the Grigsby Farm is one of the best high end trophy bow hunts out there, but you're looking for best experience for affordable price…there you go. If interested look up B Three Outfitters. Good luck and hope you find a great hunt somewhere.

I've mentioned it several times…if I were to go on a guided whitetail hunt it would probably be in a western state. Your odds of success surely have to be greater, the scenery beautiful but the drive and trophy potential might not be as good as other places.
Wyoming would be a place I would research for archery. 7J is a reputable outfitter.

Check out Illinois Trophy Bowhunters. Steve Phelps is the owner and has some of the best hunting leases in Pike County. Has properties that are only bow hunted and are hunted for a limited amount of time each year. Him and his guides know how to hunt and how to hunt mature deer. Check out their page and testimonials. I would suggest having realistic expectations not only do you have to close the deal but the limited time frame you have to hunt a lot has to come together. Additionally his camps are designed for serious hunters not luxury (go to Heartland Lodge for luxury). Whatever you do I would suggest doing your homework ask lots of questions and speak to people who have went and been successful and unsuccessful.

I have a deposit in with Tommy Nails at Whiskey Ridge in SE Iowa. My buddy hunted with him a few years back and had nothing but good things to say about Tommy. I've spoken to him on the phone and he answered all my questions. Assuming I draw a tag this May/June, I will be there this fall. For NR Iowa archery, depending on the zone, can take up to 5 preference points so that's where I am; prepare for putting in to increase points each year.
I have heard of IL Trophy Bowhunters and South Fork in IL being good outfitters as well.
I second the other comments about talking to people who have harvested and people who haven't harvested.

If you just want a giant rack, I'd go high fence.

If you just want the experience of father son comraderie, I'd camp and hunt public, and spend the bucks on an elk hunt (or antelope is a perfect father son hunt for relatively cheap)
I'd wager a bet and say you could do a father/son combo antelope hunt with a outfitter for the price of one outfitted whitetail hunt.
Plus, guided antelope is going to be 100% odds of shooting at something, 100% fun and 90% stress free.…just ignore those that say they taste horrible, or better yet they do taste horrible and just bring me the meat😛

I have a good friend that owns, operates and guides in Kansas. His name is Mark Knight, and he owns Midwest Whitetail Adventures. Look them up. Pictures and the cliental of "professional" hunters that come there is just amazing. Fair chase. If you decide to call him, tell him Nate Holcomb told you to get in touch with him. You will however, have to put in for the tag in April.

Good luck in Iowa! Tough tag to draw.

Most states with a draw system have somewhat similar cost schemes.
Iowa charges you for your preference points about $60 each year.
Then your whitetail tags/license are about $600 the year you draw.
If you go non guided you got cost of lodging and food.
If you go guided, those are commonly included. Outfitters commonly charge $3000 to $6000 for hunt.
Either way is not cheap.
But the experience is hard to beat.
Last week I hunted Iowa and saw 30 plus artlerless deer and 15 plus antlered deer each sit.
