My .45 can knock coke can exit holes. It's all about the shooting the proper bullet. Powebelts are probably one of the worst muzzle loader bullets made in my opinion. Check out Parker BE or fury star tip2 bullets. They absolutely crush deer and are super accurate!
The last thing I want is an expanding bullet in a MZ. If they are coming out the size of a coke can, they're expanding too much, and won't go through in many situations.

I have recovered one 223 gr platinum powerbelt out of a a deer. Killed several deer with them. Here is the recovered bullet, believe it still weighed just over 200 gr. Not bad for any bullet.

Deer Assassin turned me on to the fact Powerbelt still makes 405 grn lead bullets. They still have the expanding skirt, but not copper jacketed like the Aerotips. I bought some and will give them a try.

I've heard too many bad stories about powerbelt bullets, I've never used em. Hornady XTP 240 grain hollow points have served me well. I picked up two boxes a couple weeks ago
Well catman.. I picked up some XTP 240's today. Going to give them a shot. Maybe not this year, cause I'll need to sight my gun in again. But maybe.
Do you shoot BH209? Use a CVA?
I figure I can't learn if I don't try new things. I've always used powerbelts and on the recommendation of a friend I tried the BH209 a few years back. Now I have a stack of pyrodex pellets that probably won't get used. Loving the BH209
Thanks catman.. and everybody else.

Gut shot deer get away with any bullet and a lot of times the gut covers the holes up, hitting the liver puts them down but might be 100y or more before they bleed out and most of that can end up inside of them rather than on the ground, look at how many deer are shot with arrows and are lost, way more than any power belt bullet imo. most of them have 2 holes so what happened?

Really wanted to shoot the Barnes in my CVA MR but at 100 yards they grouped really bad no matter what grain of BH I tried.
Went to the Hornady 250 with yellow sabot and shoots clover leaf at 100.

The original power belts were the ones I shot that killed deer good but left little blood. I never had to track one. Which power belts are you talking about now that are bad? They are made totally different now with polymer tips . Platinum, aerolite and others . I don't know that all of them are good or bad. I guess it's just who you talk to and the experience they have. I know I shot my muzzleloader one time the other day and knocked the center out at 100 yards with aerolite but have yet to shoot a deer with one. I hope they do the job.

I never could get powerbelts to group consistantly out of my T/C 50 cal even using blackhorn 209. Switched to short black sabots with 45 cal barnes and shoots lights out. I'd like to get pass through but with accurate shooting, they aren't going far....

The original Powerbelts are the aerotip. The 295 grn and under don't go through deer, even does broadside. The 348 and the 405 grn aerotips will. However, they are no longer making the 348 or 405 grn aerotips. Luckily, turns out they are making solid lead (no copper jacket) flat-tipped 348s and 405s. I bought some of the 405s to try out.

We tried power belts the first year we MZ hunted. To the best of my memory they were the 295 grain version. Wife shot a buck about 35 yards away and bullet only penetrated about 6 inches then fragmented. I shot a smallish doe and bullet came apart about an inch after it went thru the skin.
Cut one of the bullets in half and it was a soft piece of lead with a paper thing copper coating. I tossed the power belts in the trash. I now use Barnes and the wife shoots Hornadys. Neither one of us had any issues with our bullet choices since.

Midway has the 348 leads on clearance right now. $14 and change for 20.
