How often do you guys change out the string on your compound bows? The one on my Mathews has gotta be 5 or 6 years old by now. Thinking it might be time to get a new one.

Just depends on the usage of it and your maintenance on it throughout its life. String wax will add lots of life to your equipment if applied regularly. I change mine every 2 seasons minimum but I shoot a lot. Snap a picture of your string and post it. If you do need it changed and have to go to a pro shop to do it then you need to move quickly. The bow shops will be getting bogged down real soon with season approaching.

Had a new string put on mine last year.... old one lasted 16yrs. 
I Do Not shoot much and wax the string all the time. I've heard every 5yrs at least,

I've had my Mathews Legacy for over ten years and have never changed it but I once owned a PSE SR 500 Infinity and changed it several times before I sold it guess it depends on the bow and how much you shoot it .

Ok so I used to bow hunt quite a bit. Haven't gone in last couple of years but hoping to get back out there this fall. I've owned this Mathews Switchback since around 2008 and I know the strings been replaced at least once. I think it looks fine but wanted some opinions before I start shooting it again. And yeah I know my bow is old and slow but it shoots great and I ain't changing.

That's string is in great shape. I wouldn't worry a bit about shooting it. And don't knock a Switchback! That bow broke the mold for archery at the time and set the standard for all modern bows moving forward. I loved mine!

It all depends how much you shoot it, wax it, maintain it. I had one for 10 years once. The one I have now is 3 years. I start shooting around May until season starts,I shoot 2-3 times a week 6-12 shots each time. I use a lot of wax. You need to wax the whole thing but most importantly look at where the string or cable attaches to your cam or pulls you need to get some wax on your finger and wax the entire loop connected to cam if you've not nicked the string and careful with it that's the spot that wears out. I'll change this one in 2 years when it's 5 years old
Now my dad bought a brand new crossbows 2 years ago and 3 weeks ago the string broke right in the crotch of the loop connecting to cam.

Been making strings now for 5 years. String material continues to improve. For me since I make string I replace mine yearly. If you hunt with your bow regularly and you shoot regularly I would not go longer than two years. That's just me. I shoot a few hundred times a week and participate in at least 2 TACs events each year.Ok so I used to bow hunt quite a bit. How do you know if it needs replacing?
It'll get fuzzy and look worn , even if waxed. It'll stretch. I make my own plus my bows are low poundage so I don't worry about it but if I was shooting a high dollar high poundage bow a lot I'd change it every couple of years regardless of how it looked.

Smokey mountain pro archery, the old man is really good, he will not quit until your happy, his son who is older knows what he's doing but I had to stay on him to get my peep sight right he thought he was just going to put it in and I would walk out, no no no. He fixed it with not much effort from me pushing him to do so, just check your bowand paper tune before you leave. The old man won't let you leave without paper tuning it. I've used them for years. They are in Seymour
