Just noticed LBL squirrel opens Aug. 28th same day as state season. It was opening a week before. I bet some people are going to get caught. They did some like that with deer season this year.

How good is the squirrel hunting at LBL? I've been up there a few times but never paid attention to any hickory or beech trees I might have seen. I don't recall hearing or seeing a crazy number of squirrels on any of my deer hunts.

Like anyplace if you know the right place it can be great. A few years ago I limit out without taking more than 2 steps, but it is a spot that a lot of other people know. So I have started looking around some more.

It's been years, but we used to camp at LBL and have an absolute blast hunting squirrels in the morning, swimming midday and fishing in the evenings. For the most part, we'd be in squirrels at LBL, but we did have the occasional off year when our group kill was down. Flashback photos here.

It was a blast. I will have to reach out to a few of those old heads and make them aware that LBL does not open a week early this year. That was the big draw for many of us. Early start, good fellowship, good eating (squirrel & dumplings), and just an all around good time.

I'm 98% sure they meant for it to open a week prior as usual, but got confused just like they did with the deer dates.
I don't think "they" ever even thought much about it.
You may be giving them too much credit.

May just be more a case of too many non-hunters making the decisions.
That is trending everywhere in hunting regulations.

How are they going to get caught? In 20 years of hunting I seen a GW once and that was at a boat ramp.
I have been stopped a couple of times. Turkey season this year I saw them going around and checking. I relies they don't check too often but they do some.
