The country of Australia has already banned (and destroyed) most guns from citizen ownership via government confiscation and melting/destroying the guns confiscated from law-abiding citizens.

A few citizens have been allowed to retain certain collectables and target guns, which must be kept in a locked safe, in an unoperable state (no bolt or action within the safe), and no ammunition, i.e. not usuable for any defensive purpose.

As most people with any common sense would expect, violent crimes, including murder, have risen dramatically since citizens are less able to defend themselves.
