Do coyotes ever stop running?

(Other than shooting them...) Every coyote I see seems to be on a serious mission. Trotting fast, following their nose. On Sat morning I heard steps behind my climber, but thought it was another deer. Then I noticed it wasn't a deer, and turned to look and saw a beautiful red/gray coyote. I tried to put a pin on him, but he didn't stop. I made some squeaking sounds and finally whistled, but he stopped at 30yds behind a tree then took off at a trot again. What sounds will stop them in their tracks?
