There's no valid reason for restricting use of shot larger than T for shooting coyotes and other varmints. Why can't TWRA Commission change this meaningless rule?

Probably could if enough people went to the meeting and proposed it.
Dunno.

Have you ever taken part in something like this, Ruger. My thinking was either getting people to write letters to the commissioners at their listed addresses or to start some sort of online petition.

Too many of our regs are a matter of "that's the way it's always been" rather than having a basis in reality.

Buckshot, 4-000 size, simply hits harder and penetrates better than T.

I have sent letters and emails but since they have the commission meeting in the middle of the week I have never been able to work it to attend.

I know that one voice in the meeting carries more weight than a BUNCH of signatures on a petition.

There are a lot of law enforcent problems with this and I would predict that if it is done it will be over the objections of the agency.

There are also some safety concerns, due to the much greater range of 00 buck pellets over smaller pellets, as well as their spreading left, right, up and away. This is particularly a greater concern with the new "hevi" buckshot, where a #1 buck may behave more like OO, and OO more like a .22 bullet.

Not saying that most hunters can't be safe with buckshot, just pointing out that it is inherently less safe than smaller shot sizes. In the meantime, the #4 "hevi" turkey loads are a pretty wicked coyote load.

Yes at least up to size #4 buck for predators. #4 is more available, cheaper, and more effective than the specialty coyote loads. I can't see where it would be a 'safety' issue- in fact I thought some states limit certain areas to buckshot or slugs because of safety concerns. Heck a high powered rifle is much more 'dangerous' as far as distance and damage potential. Also it should be legal to use a centerfire rifle when hunting predators any time of the year, not during certain times as affected by other big game seasons. Anyone that is going to shoot a deer or turkey illegally will do so anyway, not because they are coyote hunting and happen to see a deer. PH

I talked to TWRA Officer earlier this year and he told me Buck Shot was fine to use on coyote, as long as deer season is not open.

Buckshot is not legal for hunting anything in Tennessee.

Why is that, InfoMan? How long has that been the rule in Tennessee?

Mr. Parrish referenced LE concerns, but I'm a LEO (and a firearms instructor since '96) and don't know what those would be. And he says heavier than lead buckshot is about lethal as the plague and will go to all points of the compass with an intent unmatched by even a Global Hawk UAV (I'm joking, a little).

As Plateau Hunter points out, if we go down this "buckshot is too dangerous road", won't our centerfire rifles be outlawed soon?

Any shotgun load is going to be on the ground within a couple hundred yards (even fired at a 45 degree angle), whereas a .22 Long Rifle can kill you at 1.5 miles if you believe the warning on a box of Remington Subsonic loads.

Heck, we're not talking about going to a crowded dovefield and hosing with 00 Buck at low birds.

I sincerely believe these anti-buckshot rules (they ain't laws) are based in somebody's "well I heard" belief system from way back in 1949 when the Tennessee Game and Fish Commission was created. If I know bureaucracy, the founders of TWRA's predecessor probably just copied another state's regs at the time.

Let's ask our commissioners to change this rule and start killing more predators in the woods.
