I archery hunt almost year around and i tie a small bird feather to a piece of fishing line and glue it or tie to the end of my stabilizer. All i have to do then is look at the end of my stabilizer to check the wind. You can do the same thing to the end of your gun.

Get yourself a "cat-tail". Pluck out seeds and let them fly. One cat tail will last for years. I keep mine in a plastic bag in my truck. A pinch will last a long time before having to refill.

I, like some others, use a small feather and sewing thread. I prefer an owl feather if you happen to find one or a turkey breast feather about 1 1/2". I guess a goose breast feather would work too. These seem to be more fluffy and the slightest breeze will move them.

A little trick that works well. Some of the eye drop & nasal spray bottles have removable ends on them. Once it is empty, wash and dry. Then fill 1/2 way with baking powder, you now have a puffer.
No scent and a puff of the powder indicates the wind direction.

I use the baking soda puffer, cattails and the feather hanging from my barrel. All of these are great for what the wind is doing within a few feet of your location, but it doesn't tell you where your scent is going long-range. If I'm setting up a stand I want to have an idea of what the wind is doing relative to the temperature, time of day, prevailing wind direction, so I use smoke bombs and watch which way the wind is swirling and where my scent would potentially go. I don't do this when I'm hunting, of course. After you do this under several different wind conditions and record the data, it will give you a good indication of what's happening with your scent.

I like to know what the wind is doing where my bullet is going. I usally tie a piece of marking tape at 50 and 100 yards out. Wind often swirls and gusts. Down range it is usally doing something different than at the stand.

This whole thread got me to hang a light weight ribbon on a ten inch stiff wire stuck in the top of a wood post just a few yards from our camper door. no longer do we have to stand out in the cold to see which way the wind is blowing...but just check out the ribbon.
thanks guys!! such a simple thing, wish I had done it years ago

I look for a dried giant thistle week this time of year (real common in grown up pastures). The seed silks from the flowers work better than cattail lint I think. One plant usually has enough for 10 years. I pack as much as possible in a empty film canister. Pull out tufts and separate some. Get a bunch drifting in a NO wind situation and it really shows what the thermals and currents are doing.

Here's what I do for the wind. I have a little medicine bottle stuffed with cotton swabs. To check the wind, I pinch off strands and let them go in the air. When there's no wind to really feel on your face or see by watching the greenery sway, that little puff of cotton swabs will drift away to let you know where your scent is drifting towards. Works great, and is cheap.
Best thing is that you can also take a pinch of the cotton swab and wrap one end of the strands on a little limb or other stationary object. That way you can more permanently watch which way the wind blows.
First year I started doing that, and kept to hunting the wind, I saw more deer than I ever had before.
Try it-- cheap, and very effective.

if I am high enough in a tree I don't worry about it much, but when I am ground hunting I usually tie a small ribbon a few yards away from me on a small limb.

I use the fluorescent fly tying material for making eggs. Really fuzzy stuff. Got a bag full for $3
Get a film canister and cut an X in the lid. Stick about 1/2" of the string through the cut and pack the rest(8-12") in the canister. Mine has lasted 5 years and still not close to running out.
Try the orange/red/pink for max visibility. I got the green and it gets lost against a green background during bow.

Yea I check the wind online regularly as well.
Seems like its wrong 80% of the time.
Just light a lighter and watch the flame.
I dont smoke but the guys I grew up hunting with ALL did and that's the trick I got some many years ago.
I dont smoke but carry a lighter

An acceptable way in Europe is to smoke a cig. It goes against everything I had ever been taught. So I had to ask the first time I watched them do it, and the answer I got was, we were down wind so it wasn't an issue.
It had no affect, we all got our quota.

i use floaters, and i also check the weather every day before i leave. Our lease runs north to south with a rd all the way thru it and it makes it easy to know where to set up according to the prevailing wind direction.

I can feel the slightest breeze on my face. So, I use Musky's method.

Pull apart tiny peices of a cotton ball. Let 3 or 4 drift with the wind. Works great. 1 or 2 cotton balls will last you all season, for pennies on the dollar.
