Flying Fish Breaks Arkansas Teen's Jaw

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. It's a fishing tale that packs a wallop so strong it broke the jaw of a southeastern Arkansas teen and covered him in fish blood and guts.

Seth Russell, 15, of Crossett, was cruising Lake Chicot on a large inner tube towed by a boat when a Silver Asian carp leaped from the water and smacked him in the face. Seth was knocked unconscious.

"He doesn't remember anything at all," the boy's mother, Linda Russell, said last week. "He was laughing, and the next thing he remembers, he is waking in a hospital."

The teen has had oral surgery to wire several teeth together and still experiences back pain that doctors attribute to whiplash from the high-speed collision, his mother said.

He's not the only one who's has a run-in with the "flying" Silver Asian carp.

"They do not fly, but they are quite good jumpers," said Carole Engle, director of aquaculture and the fisheries center at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. "Over the past year, we have had some calls about fish jumping and causing injuries on Lake Chicot.

"Their jumping behavior is a problem, and their population appears to be growing there," Engle said.

Silver Asian carp were first imported to the United States in the 1970s. Catfish farmers brought them here to remove algae and other suspended matter from their ponds. The Environmental Protection Agency started a program allowing cities to use the fish to help clean the water in sewer treatment plant ponds.

I was channel surfing a couple weeks ago and there was some Fish and Wildlife guys doing some electro shocking. I think it was on the upper Mississippi. They said the sound of a boat motor makes em jump. There were literally thousands of them jumping as they motored up the river. Really sad.

Anything on the Mississippi or connected to it is full of those things.

Seen that, Gil.

I like extreme carp shotgunning...alas illegal...but it would get rid of a ton of 'em.
You could call it "skarp", "sporting carps"...

Repeatedly, you ask those who are willing to talk about the problem...and I have been asking for years...and many come up with the same solution...find a market.

Several have ideas/commercial ventures out there, but evidently none have caught on.

For a long time I asked, what about the Asian carp? What about the Asian carp? Nobody wanted to say, and the reason evidently was that nothing could/can be done. Run its course and see what happens.

Heard they have caught 'em at Pickwick. and Kentucky Lake is next if not already.

Imagine Memorial Day weekend at Yellow Creek/Pickwick with these things and the jet skis.

Some say they have to have the stronger currrents to successfully spawn...don't know about that, either.

Dunno.

Guess I better take the body armor with me this weekend. We're fishing our last 2 day club tourney of the year this weekend at Lake Chicot!

They jump at the sound of motors...that doesn't apply to trolling motors, does it?

I guess they can't hit me if I stay on the bank. \:D

I don't know if this still goes on, but years ago there was a similar situation with spoonbills at Birdsong on Kentucky Lake. It was very common in the summer for them to become airborne as you were skiing, and we had numerous near misses, although none of us ever caught one in the teeth. Anyone else ever observed that behavior from spoonbills?

Craziest thing I've ever heard! I'd like to see that, though.

I have seen spoonbills surface...but never in the numbers and heights of the Asian carp.

These would come out, like head level with a skier. Obviously, not in the huge numbers of the Asian carp, but frequently enough to get your attention. And, unlike the carp, I don't believe that they were jumping in response to the boat. I think that they were jumping for whatever reason(maybe parasites, which I'm told are common in spoonbills), and the boat just happened to be coming by at that moment. This was in birdsong bay, which is relatively shallow, and not out in the main lake.

Just got back from our club tourney this past weekend at Lake Chicot and we did see several, but they weren't near as bad as I have seen in other places. Did have one bout make us have to change the undershorts though! Did see some guys in a big Mastercraft pulling skiers on the lower, much shallower end of the lake and that's where wwe had our run ins with them. All I could think about was that kid getting hit by a carp just a week or so ago on the same lake doing the same thing.

I have been hit by one before while riding in a boat, and know of several people that have been hit in the face by them when boating around Memphis on the Mississippi River.

I had a smallmouth bass jump in the boat one time. My first thought was something like "why couldn't that happen during a tournament".
