You can walk to work if you want to. I don't. Lake Erie was basically dead when I was in grammer school. It's as alive as it can be now.
That's true, but it didn't get that way by accident. Lake Erie is cleaner now because we got smart and started regulating the polluters who dumped in it. I'm wary of people who favor going back to the days when the polluters had free rein. Have you ever seen a river that has been poisoned by mine tailings? It's an ugly sight.

You're missing my point. We can "protect" the environment to the point that we can't do anything. I'm not willing to do that. If the people of Alaska think they have a way of making their lives better by mining, mine away. I don't think it's right for zealots from all over the nation to try and dictate what the Alaskans want to do for their needs. Democrats keep yaking about the need for renewable resources. Fine. Take half the handouts they've been championing for fifty years and develop something other than breastfed adult Americans.

You're missing my point. We can "protect" the environment to the point that we can't do anything.
You can go overboard with environmentalism, to the point where you're really just anti-technology. You can also go overboard with anti-environmentalism, to the point where you allow polluters to do whatever they want with no regulation. Neither extreme serves our interests.
Pebble Mine isn't an "overboard" issue though.
The problem with Pebble Mine is that it would be the largest open-pit mine in North America, right at the top of the Bristol Bay drainage. It will generate 2.5 billion tons of acidic waste material that will contaminate the biggest sockeye salmon fishery in the world.
Sportfishing groups and commercial fishing groups alike oppose the mine. It's not even a close call. Opponents include the Sportsman's Alliance for Alaska, Alaska Wilderness Recreation and Tourism Association, Alaska Independent Fishermen's Marketing Association, Federation of Fly Fishers, Trout Unlimited, American Rivers, etc.
Governor Palin has said in some places that she has no position on the mine, and then in other places she has suggested that she supports the mine.
Regardless of her stance on other issues, she ought to be ashamed for allowing this project to go forward. She's not supporting sport fishermen or conservationists.
