Wait until 4 p.m. take a boat you don't much care about and a net for shad dipping (I prefer Grizzly or Skoal but shad is what works). Go below Cheatham dam.
Go to the far wingwall and dip some shad, throw the big ones back. It is going to beat the bejeesus out of your boat and the Laotians may snag you.(Ruger-that is not a racial slur. It is a fact.) What you want are shad, 3-5 inches in length. Keep them alive. Make sure your life jacket is buckled.
Now using a Carolina type rig and a 1/2 ounce sinker, hook the shad through the lips/eyes. Run up just short of the boils and cast into the froth. Let the weight sink and bump bottom.
Hang on. And use a casting rod with at least 50# braided.
You will lose a lot of weights. You will also catch a lot of rockfish and some of them may push 50. My personal best is 53. I have caught a ton over 40.
I don't do it anymore. Too hard on men and equipment.
