Anyone ever fish it? Especially interested in the stretch from I-40 on down to the Duck River.

The Buffalo is in my top 5 all-time, although it can be cruel. I can't tell you how many 2-day trips I've had where I caught a ton one day and next to nothing the next. I have only floated that section once, and as I recall, when it flows into the duck, it became big, slow water. The rest was beautiful, smallie riffles, rocks, and blowdowns everywhere. Perfect for tipping your canoe or catching redeyes and smallies.

My favorite baits...

Jig with Mr. Twister tail - white or black with green tail (depending on water clarity)
Slider worms - golden glitter or black with green tail
Carolina rigged lizards
For all of the above, don't do a thing to 'em except let them deaddrift downstream, let them swing, reel in, repeat.

Size 7 countdown rapala in silver - heck any jerkbait that will suspend to a foot or two.
Crawfish crankbaits in natural colors in riffles.
Topwater at dawn and dusk (I prefer a chartreuse/white buzzbait).
For the slow water, fly rod with popper and dropper (a small nymph of any sort) for bluegill and small largemouth.
I love taking a cast net and using 4 or 5 inch minnows. It will out-fish artificaials any day. If you can catch some hellgrammites, you'll need to wear a diaper. \:D

I love the classic riffles and their heads and tails, but my favorite is a long, deep run with a big bend in it. Big-azz rocks and blowdowns are a plus. Smallies will school up there sometimes. Camp right there, prop your rods up against the boat, and catch some cats at night. That low on the Buffalo, you are liable to tear into some stripers/rockfish on live minnows at night. You will also catch gar and drum and maybe even scare the pants off you with a mudpuppy/waterdog or three. I'm drooling just thinking about it.

Fitz - I know you're lurking on here. Time to man up and post on how to catch them bigguns on the Buffalo.

Good luck. I want a full report.

I know everything there is to know about fishing it from 40 to the Duck River. But, then again, I'm sworn to secrecy. Secret spot.
