I normally shoot 100gr. 3-blade muzzys but this year with all the rage buzz I might try them and I was wondering about speed I have an older bow that only shoots about 270-280 fps is that fast enough or should I stay with the tried and true muzzy?

I personally will not shoot mechanicals of any kind. I think there is a reason they are not allowed in any shape, form, or fashion by professional guides in Africa. That includes hunting the little animals as well as the big ones.

Don't be affraid to try mechanical broadheads.I have shot anywhere from 50 lb bows up to 103 lb bows.If you get use to a bow and broadhead combination and have confidence plus shooting small groups.I wouldn't be scaried if mine shot 200 feet per second.

You will be good to go . Speed is okay I prefer shot placement with a sharp broadhead.

280 is plenty. It doesn't matter how fast you're shooting if you don't hit the target. My old PSE shot around 251. Never had my Switchback on a chrono and have no intention to.

I was worried about having enough energy to push that big broadhead all the way through to have an exit wound.

You bow is plenty fast enough . I shot plenty of deer in the old days with bows that shot a 2117 Gamegetter @ 190 fps .
Guys get too caught up in speed .

Put the soapboxes away guys. I think he is wondering about the blades opening. It didn't appear that he is looking for the world's fasest bow.

Headhunter, I think you should ask the deer and hogs I have shot with expandables what they think. African animals and scrawny whitetail deer are two different things. Like shooting a dove with a .270 rifle.

I have killed a couple deer with the rage BH. I think you will be fine. Just take a good double lung shot and enjoy the blood trail. Hope you have a great season and good luck!

Very easy to get a bow that is too fast for the broadhead you are shooting. In fact, some mechanicals open in the air if the bow is too fast. I have some that simply cannot be shot at over 290 unless you rubber band the blades.

Given the preference, I liked my compounds to shoot about 250. I have had several bows that I slowed down to get better accuracy and arrow flight with the b'head I was using. I never shot less than 125 grains and often shot 150's. Real easy to get a bow too fast for a two-blade 150.

Remember...speed works both ways.

I see where bowriter is coming from . At speeds exceeding 265 fps or so , some broadhead designs tend to wind plane more . Mechanicals or low profile fixed blade heads are a good choice for higher IBO speeds .

The Rage head is a good mechanical broadhead because of the reward opening blades that don't expend KE to open up like the front opening blades do .
My preference is the low profile Slick Trick fixed blade heads . They have less tendency to wind plane at higher speeds than my standard size fixed blade heads did .

Only 270-280? People must not think they have any speed unless they are breaking the 300 fps mark. My first bow was doing good to hit 220 @70#29". 270-280 is plenty fast.

I do agree but the way the rage BH(one he was asking about) opens from the rear. Good topic though.

I have never shoot an arrow through a chrono with any of my bows . I'm guessing my current setups are around 265 or so . I really don't care as long as they shoot where I'm aiming and have enough KE to do the job . ;\)

Pssst! Little hint if it ain't broke don't fix it! I had bad experience with the exp. heads, spitfire and snypers. Back to Muzzy's now and no intentions on changing. Easy to find, flies great, tough head and lots of confidence. MUZZY BAD TO THE BONE!

Killed alot of my deer with arrow seed around 230fps. I now shoot about 255fps. I have "got" be able to see my arrow flight.

I agree. I can see a fixed blade and know what happens on impact. You can't see a mechanical and what I can't see I don't trust. I work under the KISS method with hunting...Keep it simple stupid.. and a fixed blade is about as simple as it gets.
