That is very interesting, however it does not factor in Sponsorships, which either pay some anglers outright... or at least cover all (or portion) of expenses. I see some names "in the red" who are surely reaping large sponsor benefits.
Of course no one can depend on those sponsorships until they reach the "elite" phase of their career... and this is a great illustration of what it costs to get there.... if ever?

Just don't get the whole rage with bass tourneys. Tough stuff especially for the guys barely breaking even.

True , without sponsors most of the pros would not be able to fish the tournament trail .

I agree. I'm sure it's fun and all, but I could'nt do it. The only exception would be for charity.

Same thing can be said for any sport. Until you are in the elite group none of them pay too well.

Of course, it doesn't figure sponsorships, or seminars, or whatever else. But...it's no pay scale like golf by any means. Lot of golfers out there making a living that you will never know their names.
Lot of wannabe bass pros out there sleeping in the back of the truck, eating baloney and loading up credit cards...
Hard facts, hard truth...way it works, I guess. Just posted it fyi...kind of interesting, I think.
May/could also be a view of the business itself...consolidating market...fishing industry is a big pie...but there are only a few players that really have (big) pieces.

They say that 10% of the fishermen catch 90% of the fish.
Same is probably true of tournament profits... 10% of tourney anglers reap 90% of available profits.

Trust me, that is a fact. David Dudley is one of the winningest in tourney fishing of all time, and he had every credit card he owns maxed out before the tourney he won on Loudon a couple months ago. I personally know several that fish pro for a living, and it is tough. Most own businesses and use their profits there just to break even. The money won vs what it cost to fish in the link provided just counts entry fees to the tourneys. It does not include gas, food, lodging, out of state licenses, tackle, maintenance of boats and vehicles, etc....

Carp fishing is where it's at..Esp. when you consider expenses versus winnings..........

Point of interest more than question...question was kind of a teaser to make you check it out.
Bottom line...making it as a competitive bass pro is a VERY difficult row to hoe.
I have no doubt those at the top deserve to be there, toss the lot of them on a huge reservoir, say LAKE ANYWHERE, anytime...and they will be catching fish within days...under the worst conditions.
But I also suspect there are a lot of good anglers out there that will NEVER slip through such a very small window of opportunity.
So your child comes to you and says he wants to be a bass pro. You are probably better to say, "...son, let me tell you about this game called Power Ball."

What is ironic is that the best and most consistent bass fisherman in the series, Kevin Van Dam, just does it for passion. His family are millionaires and he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He don't need the money.
And there are two types of sponsorship, monetary and equipment/tackle. The second one does not help with bills and only about 5-10% of the fishermen get any money. It is dog-eat-dog. Most of these guys are just trying to live the dream but will have no retirement to rely on and will be bankrupt the closer they get to it. The next crop of young guns that will come through the ranks in the next 5-7 years will play havoc on the veterans.

A really good fisherman that decides not to go pro and just fishes the little amateur "fruit jar" tournaments will make more money than about 90% of pros.
If they go pro they would starve.

I don't follow tournament fishing that much, well, maybe more than the average outdoorsman...kind of goes with the job.
But I do think KVD...is the Tiger Woods of bass fishing. He laughs at that description, by the way. Just my opinion, but I certainly believe it holds water, and if there is fish in KVD can catch 'em.
Yeah, I hear 'em mention his family's boat business back in Mich. I was talking to him one time and I realized how big that "boat business" back in Michigan was.
"Man, I always pictured that being basically a bait shop..."
He thought that was pretty funny, too.
Yeah, bass fishing is supposed to be "a southern thing..."; but I would NEVER count this "Yankee" out...really amazing talent. Seeing him at the launch, has to be like seeing Tiger on the tee — this feeling that at most, you are playing for second. lol.
Young guys coming on...yep, they certainly no more than the old schoolers did at their age (a lot of thanks to the old schoolers themselves)...havoc, maybe...IF they can afford to play the game on the big stage...
No telling the talent out there playing the game "fruit jar" style. But this could be said at any golf course, any gym, softball diamond, etc., etc. Ambition, luck and lunacy (against all odds)...may make difference...dunno.
Again, stars have to align to make it in any pro sport...but also in line with the stars, in the bass pro world anyway...is a the eye of a needle. LOL.
