I have the Savage model 93 in 17hmr with a bull barrel and it's a tack driving machine and fun to shoot.

22 Mag for me. CZ and Marlin are on top of the list.

I also have the savage 93 in 17 hmr but with the regular barrel. Also a tack-driver. Last group I through at 100 yds, all 4 holes were touching. hard to do on a windy day though.

FWIW, I've shot 2 coyotes in the chest with my .17hmr and they both fell down but got right back up and ran off, never to be found. I won't be using the .17 for 'yotes again, but I honestly don't know if the .22 mag does any better since I don't own one. Back to the '06 for coyotes.

Have you shot any 'yotes with the 17 using the game points? I haven't but was wondering if they do a little better job. We had a Remington 597 (semi) but had some problems. Remington is sending us a new gun, so I can't say anything against them.

The .17 is simply awesome.
If you are squirrel hunting with it, however, it will literally blow them in half if you hit them wrong.
Definately have to have a head shot or you will only get about half the meat.
I personally coyote hunt with either one, even though either will kill one, I just prefer a quicker kill with a round that is a tad more forgiving for my poor shooting abilities.

On WMA during squirrel season you have to use rimfire or shotgun for coyotes. Centerfires are illegal because they are not considered small game rounds. THis is the only time the 22 mag gets the nod. Redblood and a couple of guys went to Laurel Hill for some late season coyote hunting. They called up three on three different sets. Two were shot with a 17 and lost. One was shot with a 22 mag. The one shot with a 22 mag was the only one that was found.

If you are getting a true predator caliber, get the 204 or 223. If you are looking for something to use on WMA's for the centerfire restrictions, get the 22mag. I have killed coyotes with 243, 223, 204, and 17HMR. I will never use the HMR again. Almost lost the coyote because she almost got to some thick stuff before she expired. All the others with the 243, 223, and 204 never took another step.
