I'm a 63 yr. old fella thats been fishin for bass most of my life. However, I've got to admit that I never been much into the crank bait thing....just never had a lot of luck at it. I have thrown some "Rattle Traps" with some success along with a few shallow running baits....mostly with minimal success. I want to try some deep diving crank baits. I'd like a few suggestions as to what rod'n'reel set-up works well for you guys. You know...rod length and action.....and gear ratios. I don't mind paying the price for decent equipment either. Some suggestions please. I live in Henry Co. and spend most of my time on Kentucky & Barkly lakes. Any help would be appreciated.

For deep cranking, the rod description Buckblaster gave is a good one. A longer 7' rod in a medium acion gives you plenty of distance for deep diving crankbaits to help them reach their maximum depth on each cast. As far as reel ratios, I prefer nothing faster than a 5:1 myself. But I am talking about deep diving plugs here, not lipless baits. You want a fast ratio reel for those and I prefer a stiffer rod.
Good deep cranks to try are DD-22's, Fat Free Shads, 3/4 ounce Hot Lips, and Manns 30+'s. Warning on the 30+'s though, they are work, but they are the deepest running crankbait on the market. The Rapala DT-16 gets a lot of rave also, but I can't comment from personal experience on it as I have not bought any new crankbaits in over 5 years.

Bandit Rootbeer series 300 or flatmaxx are hard to beat,My favorite is the bomber fat free shad and fry, also storm hot-n-tots!

I use deep divers alot this time of year, I prefer the DD-22 crankbaits. The new Rapala big crankbaits work good also. I use a 7ft. med./heavy rod. I like the Shimano Calcutta reels for deep crankin. A good reel with 5:1-6:1 gear ratio wiil work fine and one that will hold alot of line. Get on the ledges on Kentucky and Barkley and hang on.

I use a 7'6" MH action rod for deep divers. If I used a 7' I'd use a a medium. I also use a Calcutta reel. Ky Lake is an awesome crankbait lake. Its not as productive right now as it will be in another month and a half or especially May & June.
Like gbee said. The ledges are the place to find them. I always throwing a DD-22 or DT16 Rapala.

I like the rapala dt-16 I have, well, had two of them, down to one now (whoops!) they do get where they say they are going, I've had great success with them in canada.
