Well, here's an old recipe I used to tie. I liked all the glitter and flash and even sometimes put spinners on there. As it turns out, they usually like plain old rope better than anything. They definitely don't like spinners much, but a little flash wouldn't hurt.

I caught 17 while supposedly carp fishing on the Cumby the other day. There was no hook. There was no fly tying. I doubled over a rope I had in my boat, teased it out a little, and tied my leader to its middle. It doubled over in the water and sort of undulated.

Here's the recipe anyway.

Gar Fly

Hook: Something big, usually a 2/0 straight-eye (a strong hook)
Thread: Heavy, white
Eyes: Black Sharpie dot
Body: Nylon rope,
X-LG mylar cord (pearl color)
Tail: Red rabbit fur
Flashabou of your color choice

Put a good thread base on. Sometimes, there is a core inside the nylon rope. Just remove it when you cut the rope. Cut a piece of nylon rope about 4-5 inches long (you can always shorten it at the end if itís too long). Place nylon rope over the hook, tie it in near the eye, and wrap thread tightly around the rope all the way to the bend. Tie in rabbitís fur at the bend and rotate or spread it completely around the hook. Whip finish and cut thread. Cut hook completely off at the bend, making the fly hookless.
Cut a length of Mylar cord to the length from your hook eye to the end of the rabbit fur tail. Pull the core out of the Mylar, and thread the Mylar outer tube over the eye and down the length of the hook, effectively encompassing it. Secure the tube just behind the eye whip finish, and cut the thread. Youíll have to trim the Mylar ends from around the eye. Now, pull the tube toward the back, making it taught, secure it just before the bend (where you cut the hook point off), whip finish, and cut the thread. Put glue on the thread tie-offs if you want. Tease the tail end of the Mylar tube to make curvy, Flashabou-like tails. With a Sharpie, put dots on the sides of the Mylar for eyes. Now, tease the nylon rope out with a bodkin so that it gets fuzzy (this step takes time and patience). Securing a spinner to the hook eye is optional.

It is not the killing ...; it is the contest of skill and cunning. The true hunter counts his achievement in proportion to the effort involved and the fairness of the sport.

If you don't mind giving secrets away, can you offer any tips on how you tie yours?

BD you know everything there is to kow about the gar flies I have been using. If you want to know more specifics ask the creator of the pattern, Jim Mauries.
There is a metting of the Middle Tennessee Flyfishers next wednesday and the speaker is Jim. He is giving a presentation on gar fishing. Might try going there.

I don't belong to the MTFF - there's just not enough time in the schedule to make it to all the meetings I'd like to attend. As it is, I have a hard time making it to the meetings for the Hendersonville Fly Fishing Club, Trout Unlimited, and Fly South's fly tying club each month. I'll definitely talk to Jim though - he's always a great help.

I thank you for the information though - you told me what I was looking for.
