I prefer Pop R's and Spooks in the spring as water is warming up and also after the fish spawn as they are not as aggressive then and sometimes need to be coaxed into biting. Plus I can get those baits into hard to reach places and keep them in the strike zone longer.

Its always seemed that the buzzbait for me gets gradually better as the year goes on. I rarely even get bit on one until the latter part of May. I do however catch a few top water fish earlier than that on a Sammy or a Pop R. By the time October rolls around they hit top water like peacock bass on KY lake. Big toilet flush strikes. I've always just assumed it was a competition thing since they're usually schooled up pretty tight and from what I've read bait is a little harder to come by.

I love that first cold snap in October. High pressure, blue bird skies, highs in the 50's with a north wind of about 10-15. Cause a man to get his arm broke. $;\)$ I'm usually hunting instead of fishing though.

Any of y'all ever tried 1/8 or 1/4 ounce buzz in red with a black twister tail and stinger hook? One of the dealiest baits I ever used for river smallies.

Interesting. Two things that are similar that I do.
Although I haven't used the black and red buzzbait, I've found that black and red are important smallie colors. Jigs, soft plastics, even pork trailers, etc.

A friend recently turned me on to using a treble hook as a trailer instead of a single stinger hook on buzz baits (would work on spinner baits, etc. too. Dude is pretty fishy, so I take his word for it. I tried it on the Cumby last week and caught a bunch of spots. I lost a bunch, too, though, so the jury is still out on the treble. Could easily have been "user error."

Problem being, Gil, a lot of the buzzbaiting I do is in jungle thick cover. That treble hangs up bad. This spring we were killing them on buzzbaits to the extent they were ruining about two lures a day. Just had to throw them away. We had over 150 bass in two days with a 4-5# average. But they were coming out of a briar patch.

You'll see it in Nov.
