Since the caney is so popular I decided to go fish somewhere else. Didnt have much company other than a couple barges and one pontoon boat. Caught a bunch of smallish fish today. Only really saw a couple monsters. Seems there was no generation and the gar were spread out rather than concentrated inn the backwater eddies.

Excellent! I can't believe you let Simms get you hooked on that nasty redneck toothy critter!
I did a carp and gar presentation for the Hendersonville Fly Fishing Club a few months ago. I got two calls asking me to guide for gar. I don't guide cause well, I think it would suck. My point is that, as a guide, there's a market for you to guide for gar on the fly.
IMO, the Cumby lives and dies by generation. Most of the species go on the feed (or at least fall for my BS) much better when they're dumping water. The spots will eat when it's stagnant, but the smallies, carp, gar, and striper bite better or are at least more concentrated in moving water. I can't speak for cats.

Gil I think your correct about the market after all how often can you catch several fish that are measured in FEET rather than inches.

I couldn't catch a gar if I focused on it. When I go crappie fishing I catch them all day along with snapping turtles and hybrids.
I say catch...they typically pop off when they get along side the boat. Hooks don't set well in those things.

Gar are quite sporting and a load of fun to catch. They might be the dumbest or easiest fish to get to strike there is in Fresh water. I floated the French Broad a month or so ago, and swiped some monsters that were 5 feet long or so. In the words of a buddy of mine, " it's all good, no matter what species."
