Any buzzbait will work, but it is hard to beat the old Billy Phillips Buzz Jewel..........right wobble at the right speed.

White skirt right now. Once you figure out which retrieve speed puts off the "right" sound they will beat it hard. I have some Buzz baits that work better slower and some that will produce better faster. Once you get the right speed that vibration/noise and water disruption will drive them crazy (if there in the area).
The biggest top water Bass I ever saw caught was on a yellow skirt buzz bait in about 3 feet of scummy looking water. I think it tipped the scales at around 6lbs 11 ounces. Hey Ratman do you remember that fish?

I've always been pretty fond of the Blue Fox black flash but I havent seen 'em in a while. I've just been using the Booyah's the last couple years and they've done the job well.
A buzzbait bite is as good as it gets to me. They absolutely crush them in the fall. Why is that Doc? I figured competion for bait was getting revved up pretty good by then.

Buy locally. These are inexpensive ($1 apiece), and they catch the heck out of fish. A buddy of mine turned me onto them recently. Po' Boys out of Nashville makes 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 oz. buzzbaits in various colors. You can only get them at 2 locations in Hendersonville (a gas station and a trolling motor repair place), at boat and fishing shows, and at this guy's house. I think he'll deliver if you buy a bunch.

Can't say for sure myself, but I prefer them fall over spring myself. You're probably on to something as they are actively feeding up that time of getting ready for winter. I prefer Pop R's and Spooks in the spring as water is warming up and also after the fish spawn as they are not as aggressive then and sometimes need to be coaxed into biting. Plus I can get those baits into hard to reach places and keep them in the strike zone longer.

Any of y'all ever tried 1/8 or 1/4 ounce buzz in red with a black twister tail and stinger hook? One of the dealiest baits I ever used for river smallies.

Interesting. Two things that are similar that I do.
Although I haven't used the black and red buzzbait, I've found that black and red are important smallie colors. Jigs, soft plastics, even pork trailers, etc.
A friend recently turned me on to using a treble hook as a trailer instead of a single stinger hook on buzz baits (would work on spinner baits, etc. too. Dude is pretty fishy, so I take his word for it. I tried it on the Cumby last week and caught a bunch of spots. I lost a bunch, too, though, so the jury is still out on the treble. Could easily have been "user error."

Problem being, Gil, a lot of the buzzbaiting I do is in jungle thick cover. That treble hangs up bad. This spring we were killing them on buzzbaits to the extent they were ruining about two lures a day. Just had to throw them away. We had over 150 bass in two days with a 4-5# average. But they were coming out of a briar patch.
You'll see it in Nov.
