Makes sense - I've never made a "gar fly" before, and don't have anything in my tackle box that remotely resembles one.
What I used to do was keep a couple of ugly bass plugs that never caught any fish handy, and I'd tie one of those on with a bass rod and catch gar that way on slow days.
I bet it would be a blast to catch them on the fly rod, though.

Troy, those hookless gar flies of yours are awesome. I've caught a few nice gar on the flyrod lately, but I've been doing it with superbuggers. Sometimes the hook sticks, sometimes it doesn't.
If you don't mind giving secrets away, can you offer any tips on how you tie yours?
