What procedure do you recommend taking old vanes off of carbon
arrows and getting them ready for new ones?

I use a dull utility knife held at a steep angle to scratch off as much glue as possible. Then I use a rag with acetone on it to wipe off any excess glue.

I heard the acetone breaks down the carbon and
weakens the spine.
It won't break down the carbon, but it dissolves the binder that holds the carbon fibers/particles together.
Acetone is readily absorbed into the hands, lungs and bloodstream. It ain't good for you!
Try using a little 600 grit wet/dry paper to finish cleaning what the razor knife leaves. Then clean the shaft with alcohol. Does a great job!

Acetone is bad if you soak the arrows in it. If you use a little bit on the surface for a few seconds it will not hurt your arrows.
You can also use 90+% isopropyl alcohol, but it doesn't work as quickly.

I have used just about everything mentioned above. I have a little scrapper tool just for arrows.It does a good job then use the fine grit sandpaper to show any glue still on the shaft. Then I use a dull knife to scrap with. Then I use denatured alcohol to wipe dust and oil from my skin and fingers off the shaft. Then I never touch that section of arrow again with my hands till it is fully refletched.

I have used acetone for 4 years on arrows and have had no effect on my arrows. I use it to wipe the arrow clean not soak it. If you wipe the arrow it will have no effect to the arrow. Soaking may be a different story.

First, I scrape off as much of the old vanes as I can with a dull knife. Then, using fine sandpaper, remove the remaining glue residue. After that, use acetone to wipe the shaft clean.
