From what I have read, the Owhi strain is stocked in the Caney. Not sure about other strains in other places. The feds inthe park are not stocking non-native strains.....

I know jack about brookie strains but the ones on the CF are very healthy and colorfull. I would not think they would be stocking the Owhi but I could sure be wrong.

Best I can tell from the Clinch, whatever strain is skinny and has washed out colors. \:\)

The same for the watauga river, alot of them look more like lake trout than Brookies. I'm in no way complaining though, they are fun to catch.

Here's what I got from the TU February NewsReel. Below are pics. I took of one of the prettier ones I've caught in the Caney. I love 'em. No downside that I can see - just icing.

"According to Frank Fiss of TWRA's Fisheries Management Division, the OWHI (pronounced OH-I) strain of brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) will be stocked in early March 2008. Introducing another species of fish on the Caney has been in the Trout Management Plan of TWRA, but all the stars finally came into alignment. Although it is unknown how the brook trout in the Caney will compete with existing stocked browns and rainbows, a couple of facts about the OWHI strain are well known.

The strain was selected for performance characterisitics of post stocking survival. Some 20,000 trout will be introduced over the 2008 stocking season. Most will be in the 7-9" range with close monitoring to assess their survival in the Caney Fork. They are currently residing at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife National Fish Hatchery at Dale Hollow Lake awaiting their release. The eggs were obtained from the Eagan Utah Fish Hatchery."

I am hoping this is true. I can't wait to see. I don't care if they're big or not. In my opinion, a brook trout in full colors is one of the prettiest fish that swims, and I'll gave a great time catching them.

They don't look unusually thin for their size to me. Colors are improving, though most aren't as pretty as a wild fish of the same size. Of course, the same thing could be said for a rainbow that's 4 months out of the hatchery truck. If they hold over and spend some time eating natural food, they ought to be gorgeous.

As far as I'm concerned, the brookies are doing a lot better than I expected. I thought there were decent odds that they'd be wiped out by meat fishermen and predators in a couple months, and the ones that survived would restrict themselves to the first couple miles below the dam.

However, as it is, they're still extremely abundant so far, and I'm catching them down as far as Kirby Road (though I don't know if that will last since temps seem to be creeping up into the 60s now on the middle to lower river).
