I know its probaly been a topic before, I just didn't see it. Whats the smallest caliber most hunters would hunt with, to take deer at ranges from 30 to 100 yards. Reason for the question is I'm looking for a caliber for a 10 year old without alot of recoil. I've had her shooting a .22 for about 5 yrs. now, I bought her a .243 handi-rifle a couple years ago. She shot it pretty well, I just wasn't happy with the gun. So I upgraded her to a Browning Mirco 7mm-08 this year and I think its going to have a little to much recoil for her right now even with some 120 grain HP loads.

IMO .243, especially for a kid.

223 will be fine out to 100. 55gr psp Remingtons work great. I personally hunt with a 243 and love it. Since you already have a 243, I would stick with that. Great caliber for whitetail in my opinion. The ammunition I have been using in my 243 is the Fusion 95gr. Never had a deer run over 20 yards with this round.

Well, I'm not a kid anymore at age 47 and 190 lbs but I've used a .243 for most of the whitetails I've killed and it's still my main deer rifle. It drops them dead in their tracks with any kind of decent shot out to 200 yds. The fastest kills for me come with Barnes 85gr TSX but the 100gr Hornady SP are reliable stoppers too.

An SKS is one of the few guns my little 5' wife finds comfortable and it hardly kicks at all because it's so heavy. No fun for a kid to carry around, but they're easy to shoot once you get to the stand. Pretty much the same ballistics as a .30-30 and fine for ranges you stated.

.260 Rem is my current passion. I'm about to post pics of handload targets.

I'm sure .243 is a fine caliber for experienced hunters, and if you're right there to coach the kid and be sure they take broadside shots, that should be OK.

I got rid of the Handi 243 when I bought 7-08. That was a mistake. I may look for a youth .243. A .223 was kinda what I was thinking about just didn't know about that small of a bullet. Thanks.........

Has she shot the 7mm-08 ? With 120 loads out of mine it's not much different than the 243 my wife shoots.

I scoped it out last weekend and shot it. Its a tack driver but the recoil felt quite abit more than the .243 handi. I may let her try it out. I just don't want to get her afraid of recoil this early. I think the mirco A-bolt 7mm-08 will be with me most of this gun season, its a sweet little rifle. \:\)

Ar-15 in 223 with 60 grain Partitions. The buffer spring in the AR takes out pretty much all recoil.

A buddy of mines nefew shot a nice 7 point this past season with a .223 youth Savage ,one cheap Federal 55gr HP though the lungs, went about 50 yards and piled up. This was a calm day, calm deer and a good rest. Myself I wouldn't use a .223,I just want more knock down than that. To bad you couldn't find her a 7-30 Waters now that a great kids gun.
